David's Troopers Medical Fund

My name is Mindy Layne, and I am David Chanek's Second Grade teacher. David is an amazing child who, unfortunately, has encountered multiple medical problems throughout his life. I have organized this page to raise awareness, and to hopefully provide David's family with some financial relief as his medical expenses are continually piling up. David is a military child and as his teacher, I believe it is my duty to serve the children of the members of our military who selflessly serve us every day. The money raised by this page will accomplish just that by improving David's quality of life.

David Chanek is an adorable child who has faced an incredible amount of adversity in the short eight years of his life. Despite being diagnosed with hemophilia, David was a happy and healthy child until October 2013, when he was hospitalized for over a month with a portacath infection. As a result of the infection, David had to undergo surgery to remove his portacath. David's doctors initially believed this had cured David's infection; however a blood culture revealed the presence of a growing, unspecified mycobacterium bacterium.

In September 2014, David developed Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a life-threatening condition where the immune system, particularly T cells and NK cells, fails to destroy infected or damaged cells as it should. David's immune system then began to damage David’s own tissues and organs, including the bone marrow, the liver and the brain. David has a NK (Natural Killer) cell deficiency which is what the doctors think is causing the HLH. The only cure for this is a bone marrow transplant.

As a result, David has less than a 30% chance of survival and might not see his 9th birthday. David still has pulmonary nodules that are necrotizing on his lungs due to his damaged immune system, and will most likely lose his lung function soon. David has also acquired tuberculosis during this time, and the medications have caused him to experience blurred vision. Due to his medical conditions, David has been forced to miss two full years of school.

David was also recently hospitalized for two additional portacath infections, all while awaiting a bone marrow transplant. When the hospital is able to locate a matching donor, and after David undergoes the bone marrow transplant, he will require an additional twenty weeks of chemotherapy, immune booster injection(s), and various steroids to ensure that his body fully recovers from the transplant.

David is now seeking treatment from a new hospital system, and while his condition is improving, the family's insurance will not cover his doctor visits and hospital stays. As such, the family has been forced to pay for David's medical expenses out-of-pocket. David's strength and resilience is an inspiration to us all, and through all life has thrown at him he has remained an optimistic, sweet child.

Through donations David's family will be able to pay off and continue paying for his medical expenses. I would greatly appreciate your support and donations. David is a young hard working child who deserves a healthy, fun, worry free life.
