Medical Brigade to Nicaragua

Dear family and friends,
This June I will be traveling with a group of 40 students from UCSD to Nicaragua with an organization called Global Medical Brigades and work hand-in-hand with doctors and community. In the last 4 years, UCSD students help treat hundreds of patients who otherwise would not have been able to receive this basic health care. The core of this effort and the Global Medical Brigades is to enable students to help others and personally work with under-resourced communities in Nicaragua, all while developing our skills in health services. 100% of the funds raised will be put towards our ability to buy and deliver medicine and services as well as the sustainability of the Medical Brigades’ work in these poor communities.
Nicaragua was selected since it was cited by the World Bank as the 2nd poorest country in the Western Hemisphere after Haiti and has been designated as a priority country by the Pan American Health Organization/WHO Strategic Plan. The basic needs of education, healthcare, and clean water are luxuries for the majority of the people there, and in the rural communities where we will be working, these luxuries are even harder to find. It is highly common for a family of four to live on less than $2.00 a day with less than 3 gallons of water per day available for use.
