David is our youngest son and the strongest young man anyone will ever meet. At the tender age of 9 years old he was diagnosed with stage VI Rhabdomyosarcoma. The tumor was located at the base of his skull with segments spidering all through his left facial area. With two years of extensive chemotherapy and radiation directed straight to the left jaw and left frontal lobe and experimental surgery David was declared cancer free but not with some life altering and debilitating conditions such as TBI (traumatic brain injury), limited short term memory, extensive foot drop just to name a few.
Now coming up on his 21st birthday David is dealing with another debilitating condition brought on by the treatment that saved his life. The entire left side of his jaw as well as his teeth is decaying due to the radiation treatment. Most of his molars area gone with just bits of the root left in the gum line and his jaw bone is being reabsorbed. Almost on a weekly basis David will wake up with tooth fragments lingering in his mouth.
David has such an amazing spirit and will to live, never once complaining about the excruciating pain that he is constantly in from this damage brought on from the treatment that had saved his life all those years ago.
We of course have insurance, however because this is a dental issue they will only cover up to $1,500 a year on approved procedures. Due to all the scar tissue and damage David can only open his mouth a faction of what you or I can, because of this he must be put under sedation for all procedures. David must also have hyperbaric oxygen therapy prior to and after the procedures to aid in the healing process.
Please help us help our son. As his parents all we want is for him to not hurt. Any amount that you give helps.
The funds will be used to get David extensive surgery and the hyperbaric oxygen therapy that is required to have the surgery. The surgery will take out all of the bits of tooth left in his jaw line, replace all the lost teeth and replace the jaw bone. It’s going to be a long painful journey for David but without these operations the damage can lead to serious health issues.
