The Man Who Found His Freedom

Donation protected

David was born on the Isle of Dogs over 50 years ago and has severe Cerebral Palsy; this affects his speech and motor skills. Despite all this, David has an incredible zest for life and takes an active part in numerous events connected to the arts - he has been involved in many shows (organising, directing and acting) at The Space Theatre for over 15 years and has many close friends with whom he enjoys a great social life.

Through hard work and dedication over the past 12 months David has written, with the help of his friend and co Workspace member Bill Keenan, a play reflecting his life. Danielle McIlven will direct this play; she is a very established theatre director of off-west end theatre. We are hoping to show this play at The Space Theatre.

This play focuses on David’s struggle to overcome communication difficulties and his determination to live a full and active life.  Through dramatising some key episodes from David's life, the play explores attitudes to disability and gives David a voice to describe what it is like to live with this specific condition.  The nature of Cerebral Palsy leads many to assume that it is a mental condition as opposed to a physical one.  David's determination and involvement in a variety of activities enables him to deepen understanding of his condition amongst those he comes into contact with.  David's key message in the play is 'never give up' and his perseverance is something that will resonate with us all.

Producing a play is never cheap and we would like to ask for your help to enable us to get this exciting production "on it’s feet" in aid of a worthy cause.  Our goal is to raise at least £5000 through crowd funding. The actual amount we need to raise is £18,000.  Please help to sponsor this project by donating as much as you can.  All donations, large or small, will be greatly appreciated.

We have a video with a short interview with David regarding the play which you can watch here on this page.

Thank you for your support.
