My father, David Deslauriers, had been battling with severe depression and mental illness for the last 7 years. On Monday, July 31st 2017, his mind had suffered too much, and he took his life. In response to his inner battles, my late father wrote a book on mental illness which covers his experience, and his advice for those dealing with mental illness. In honour of my father and his wishes, and in honour of those still living and dealing with mental illness, we want to have his book published.
Many months ago, while having a conversation with my dad, he told me that if anything were to happen to him, his last wish was to have his book that he had been writing published. He was very proud of his book. To him, it was proof that despite dealing with depression and mental illness, and despite the visits to doctor after doctor, and mental ward after mental ward, he was smart. Even with the sad relationship that my father had with the healthcare system, his mental illness and depression never took away his intelligence, and in the end that gave him peace.
My dad was a spiritual man. It kept him grounded during his deepest and darkest times. He scrapped every penny that he had (literally), and borrowed as much as my brother and I could spare to publish a book titled Heaven & Hell: A Right Relationship with Our Heavenly Father. He was so proud of his book, and his close family was so proud of him too. The day that he saw the sales report for his book was one of his saddest days. He thought he would now have the money to pay us back, but his book was a flop. However, it was not the lack of sales that ate at his sadness the most, it was that he published a book in hopes of reaching out and helping people. Even after going through this sad moment, he bounced back and wrote another book aimed at helping people, this time on mental illness and depression. My dad's wish to publish his book became one of the last goals of his life. My parents lost their financial dependence as my father's mental health deteriorated which is why he was not able to publish his book before he died.
When someone you love passes away, your priorities are tested, and you begin to learn the true priorities life. My family wants to do what is right during this chaotic time for us, and have some closure knowing that my dad's last wish was fulfilled.
