Our Dad received the news that he had cancer in his bladder in February of 2017. After chemotherapy a surgery was scheduled to remove his bladder in July. At this point our family was hopeful the doctors would be able to create a new internal bladder using a piece of his intestine.  That didn’t turn out to be the case and in July of 2017, after surgery, Dad woke up in the hospital with an artificial bladder strapped to his body, hoping that at least the cancer was gone and  we could go back to resuming a mostly normal life with our Father. A couple of months later in October a cat scan revealed that the cancer had spread to his lungs and was diagnosed as inoperable. Our last hopes were to try immunotherapy and then radiation treatments. Unfortunately, they did not work and the cancer has continued to spread rapidly into his facial tissue and has attacked his physical strength as well.

My Dad is 50 years young. He has three sons and a daughter.  His oldest son, Charles, has blessed him with two beautiful granddaughters, Emilia and Stella, ages two and eight months respectively.  His stepson Nicholas is 27 and is getting married to his fiancé Larissa in June. Dakota, his daughter, is 21 and his youngest son, Will, just turned 11. Dad has a big family that has been supportive throughout this terrible process known as cancer.

Dad’s fondest memories are spending time with my family and friends celebrating holidays, having fun with his kids, nephews and nieces, and going on family vacations. My Dad was an avid coach and player of most sports but particularly softball, baseball, and football. Until recently he coached William and was playing softball recreationally. Our family was always gathering to spend time together and enjoy each other whether it was at home at one of our houses in the Bay Area or on a camping trip at one of the many lakes our Dad loved. It is hard to believe how quickly things have changed.

The surgeries and treatments have taken their toll physically, making Dad so sick he has become unable to work.  My Dad is blessed to work for a company that feels like a second family and support system. Many of his coworkers have donated their own vacation time to him to cover many of his missed days. Words cannot express the gratitude and appreciation our family has for Dad’s New Age Electric Family.  We can’t tell you how much that means to us, thank you all for your generous spirit and love!

Currently, Dad has been released from the hospital after spending a week at Kaiser San Leandro managing his breathing and pain. His condition has declined to being in bed all the time and needing 24/7 care. Our family intends to hire a nurse to assist Dad’s wife Kathy in caring for him at home. He has moments of mental clarity still, however with the amount of pain medication he is taking it has him pretty out of it since we got home yesterday afternoon. His hospice nurses have indicated to us that it is only a matter of time, and while it is hard to tell what a timeline would look like Dad is definitely showing signs of decline.

I'm doing everything it takes to fight this but it’s a treacherous battle and I don’t appear to be winning. My family is my world and they need your help. I can’t bear the thought of burdening any one of them with expenses they can’t afford.  Even if you can't donate, I appreciate you taking the time to read my story and spread the word through your network of family and friends. Every little bit helps, and it all adds up. Thank you for your kindness and charity. – Dave Targett
