August 15th we went to Johns Hopkins to have a swollen lymph node on the left side of David's neck checked out. On the 16th an ultrasound guided biopsy confirmed Dr Gourin's suspicion of cancer. On Thursday the 21st Dr... Gourin did surgery that ended up being only a biopsy of the lingual tonsils and back of Davids tongue. It confirmed that this is where the cancer originated. Because he was never a smoker or heavey drinker.. his prognosis is very good.
However surgery to remove the cancer could leave him unable to swallow or speak.. so we decided to go with the option of radiation and chemo treatments.
The treatment is grueling it consists of 7 weeks 5 days a week of radiation plus one of those days will be chemo also. Because the treatment being is done in Baltimore we have decided to stay there Monday - Friday and will be home on the weekends.
We were planning on staying at the Hope Lodge by John's Hopkins for patients/family members. There is no cost associated with this option but with only 26 beds/rooms, they are booked out. On to Plan B. That is hotels or Air BNB's. Dave is going to try to work from Baltimore during the week if he is able. Veronica will travel back and forth with limited scheduling for her clients to keep the business going.
This is where friends and family can help. We are asking for donations to help offset the cost of medical fees/RX's, and hotel stays. Every little bit adds up and helps.
