Dave Sallack's Longest Hour

Donation protected
September 26th started like any other day.  At 6:15, my husband and son left for work.  They are logging contractors doing a job about 20 miles from our home.  After their leaving, I continued about my daily activities around the house.  Around 8:45, I got onto our tractor to get some outside work done.  While driving, I felt my phone vibrating in my pocket.  I quickly turned off the tractor to take the call I’ll never forget.

My sister in law, Dawn, was on the phone and told me that a 47 year old logger got hit by a tree and it was possibly my husband Dave. A wall of fear had come over me… my worst nightmare had come true. Dawn was pulling into my driveway when I heard the ambulance on the highway below.  While racing to the area where they were working, I called my son to confirm it was Dave.  And it was.  By the time we got to him, as well as the ambulance, he was laying in the woods for almost an hour in pain, panic, agony, and prayer.

He was conscious and could move his limbs when they carried him out of the woods to the ambulance.  After a quick kiss, they placed him inside the ambulance then raced down the bumpy, dusty logging road then down the main road to meet up with the StatMedivac Helicopter where they quickly transported him to Hamot Medical Center in Erie.

Upon arrival at the hospital, they informed me it was a miracle he was alive and had some very serious injuries.  The injuries he sustained were: broken left tibia, broken right fibula, fracture of the right scapula, acute kidney injury, pulmonary contusion, and closed fracture of the spinous process of thoracic vertebra and lumbar vertebra.

After a few surgeries and a week in the hospital, he was able to come home.  It will be a long, painful recovery for him, but we all thank God that he lived through such a horrendous accident.  He will be off of work for a long period of time.  Even with all of his pain and injuries his biggest concern is for myself and our four children.  He is the main supporter of our family and this time off for recovery will leave a huge financial void.  Any amount you can comfortably donate would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you and God Bless!!
