I want to introduce to you my Aunt Nancy and Uncle Dave Krivanec. In his early years, Dave worked in all of the family businesses; from the bakery on Main Street in Stafford, to frying donuts with his father at Pam's Bake Shop in Storrs, to grilling up food at the Dip-Ahoy ice cream stand, to managing the B&D Package Store. He was a volunteer firefighter in Willington for 24 years, was active while both of their boys played sports growing up, and is currently employed by EPES Transportation as an over the road regional driver out of North Carolina. Mrs. K, as her preschoolers fondly refer to her as, drives school bus in Willington and has for the last 30 years; she's likely driven one of your own. If you're from Willington or Stafford, CT, you may very well already know them, as they're life-long residents of the area.
Unfortunately, in July of 2016, Dave was given a life-changing, if not life-threatening diagnosis; transitional cell urothelial carcinoma (cancer of the inner wall of the bladder). As a family, this isn't the first time they've received devastating news. Back in 2000, while Nancy and Dave were out to dinner celebrating their wedding anniversary, their sons Chad and Kyle were in a horrible car accident. Chad, age 21 lost his life, while Kyle, just 15, spent a week in a coma followed by three months at Children's Medical Center. Having broken multiple bones, including both legs, Kyle had to retrain his legs to walk through ten long months of physical therapy and rehab. More recently, in 2015, Nancy was hospitalized four times for her own health issues, and they continue to recover from these medical expenses today.
Dave's journey has been difficult and expensive. During his treatments, Dave is unable to go on the road, and as a truck driver, loss of work means loss of income. He has already had a transurethral resection (removal of a bladder tumor), followed by six weeks of immunotherapy. His second biopsy showed that the cancer was still present and he was sent to an oncologist who was considering 18 weeks of chemotherapy and bladder removal. Fortunately, his latest biopsy has shown signs of improvement and treatment is currently on hold awaiting future evaluations, however months of lost wages has left its toll. On top of that, there were medical out of pocket expenses, increased insurance premiums, and the costs of treatment and medicines. I've started this GoFundMe campaign to raise money for any of Dave's future cancer treatments and care and their general living expenses.
