Build for Health Mexico

About a year ago, I moved to San Francisco to start a new job. During one of my first weekends in the city, I was on my way to the theater and decided to grab a quick bite at a nearby fast food place. As I was waiting for my order, I noticed a young girl, about 19, going through the garbage bin below where people usually drop off their trays. My first thought was that she must’ve accidentally dropped something in the bin and is now trying to retrieve it. Then, I saw her pull out half a burger bun. I walked up to the girl and asked if she'd like me to get her some food. "That'd be cool", she responded. I read the meal options to her on the menu. She said "I just want two tacos". "Would you like a drink with that?"I asked. She shook her head. I ordered two tacos for her and was shocked to see when the cashier rung up the total of $2.80. I thought it was a mistake. I could not believe that two dollars and eighty cents was the price of preventing someone from eating out of the garbage bin. It pained me to realize the contrast of how an insignificant amount of money for me, can have such a big impact on someone else.
It's little moments like this that most inspire me to try to do more with the resources I have. Which is why, four years ago, I founded a not-for-profit organization with a few friends called Sperro.
This year, May 18-28th, I will be going to Mexico with 20 other Sperro volunteers to build a clinic. There are already two medical professionals there that serve the community of 1,500 people by renting a small house. We are going to build them a bigger, more comfortable, place to treat patients. It costs $13,000 USD in construction supplies to build this building. Through the collective effort of our volunteer group, our goal is to complete it.
My personal goal is to raise $2,000 for construction supplies for the clinic, in addition to the $800 I will be personally donating.
It would warm my heart if you donate to help me meet my goal.
Why give to Sperro's Mexico Trip?
1) Your dollars go directly to construction supplies. Sperro is a registered Canadian not-for-profit I started with a few friends four years ago because we wanted to maximize the dollars that go toward various projects. We are 100% volunteer run. There are no overhead or operational costs.
2) We collaborate with organizations in Mexico that have had long-term presence there and know which communities are in greatest need. We are even getting some free meals and accommodations from local families in the village to cut down costs and put more toward building materials.
3) 100% Transparency. Though Sperro can't issue tax receipts, (it costs over $5,000 in legal fees to file the Canadian charitable status documentation, and so we are still in progress to make that happen), we will publicly share all expenses and receipts from the project and will be transparent about every dollar spent.
