Dar's Life After Amputations

Donation protected
In February of 2015 I was working on a lease just outside of Ft. McMurray, Alberta. I  was working outside for about 5 hours in -40 Celsius weather. I ended up freezing my big toe on my right foot.  A blister formed which eventually turned into a diabetic ulcer. My doctor told me i would not be able to work at that point, April 15th. The ulcer would not heal and resulted in the amputation of my toe in May 2015. Do to complications a revision surgery was done in July 2015.

In May of 2016, finally it looked like everything was healing great and i was told by my doctors to start doing more activity. I began getting more active in the community and started to prepare to goback to work. Unfortunately, another diabetic ulcer opened up on the side of my right foot and medical attention was once again required. After several months of trying to heal the ulcer, my remaining toes on the right foot were diagnosed with bone infection and would need to be removed. However they could not be removed do to the open ulcer. Instead, a below knee amputation was performed on Nov 10, 2016.

After incision healing, physio and fitments of a prosthetic leg i was finally starting to get mobile again. I redeived my 1st final leg on July 13, 2017 and secured my class 5 drivers license.  Shortly after this date i developed a calus on the underside of my left foot. The calus opened up and became a diabetic ulcer. While wearing my special orthotic shoe my foot swelled up and the blood circulation to my small toe was cut off. It a matter of a few hours my toe became dead and infection started.

I went into the emergency room that day and was told i needed to have an amputation of at least one toe. Unfortunately, twp weeks later, a surgeon finally agreed to do the surgery, only now it had become a below knee amputation. I went into emergency on August 31, 2017, amputation done on Sept 15, 2017. To further complicate things, on Sept 25, 2017 i was reopened and had several blood vessels clamped off.

So i now have both legs amputated below the knee.I receive some disability monthly, but it only covers my mortgage and vehicle payment. I have not worked since April, 2015 and do not have a definite return date yet. I have been selling personal possessions to try to make up the difference each month. I am currently several months behind on utilities, just had to redo my septic system and need to finish a few renovations that were started before all this. On top of this some of the government programs that help with paying for wheelchairs, prosthetics etc are changing. Higher deductibles and less services offered.

Funds could be used immediately to catch up on overdue bills, restock an empty pantry and update my residence for wheelchair accessability.  Allowing me to concentrate on healing and rehabilitating.

Without help i could be facing power and gas being disconnected, foreclosure or repo.
