Darryl Shirk Recovery Fund

Donation protected

Our friend, father and grandfather Darryl Shirk, had what was thought to be routine bowel surgery on Wednesday, September 27th, 2017.  Darryl was expected to return to his family later that day following the procedure.  As the day went on, Darryl's pain increased and a decision was made to extend his time at the hospital. As his recovery continued things took a turn for the worse. Complications from the surgical procedure put Darryl into septic shock, secondary to his bowel perforation. During the morning of September 29th he was flown via Life Flight helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center in critical condition where his wife, Ellen, and both of his children have remained by his side at all times. Additional complications have developed which may have a severe impact on the use of his hands and feet. Darryl will require additional surgical procedures as he moves forward in the recovery process. Darryl remains in the Intensive Care Unit battling for his life.

The wrestling community and in particular the District 4 wrestling family is no stranger to Darryl Shirk. He spent over 20 years mentoring and coaching wrestlers at Middleburg H.S and Midd-West H.S. His sons, Chad and Nate followed in their father's footsteps. Chad, his eldest son, wrestled for Middleburg High School and Bloomsburg University.  Chad is currently the head coach at Saucon Valley High School where his teams have won several District 11 Championships and they finished as the PIAA State Team Duals Runner-Up in 2016. Nate, his youngest son, is currently coaching at Southern Columbia School District. Nate was a District 4 Champion, NE Regional Champ and 3X PIAA State medalist including a State Runner-Up finish in 2003.  Nate wrestled for Bloomsburg University where was an NCAA Qualifier. Darryl is extremely proud of his son’s, their accomplishments and their young families.

Darryl dedicated his life to helping not only people in the wrestling community, but also everyone he came in touch with. He is the kind of person who always greets you with a smile and a firm handshake. Darryl has a heart of gold and is known for being there for his friends and family in times of need. Darryl has gone out of his way in his support of his wife and children and especially his four young grandchildren.

Now, Darryl and the Shirk family are the ones in need.  As Darryl continues to fight for his life, we have the opportunity to give them the support that each and everyone of them have provided to others over the years. As Darryl and his family continue to battle through this long, uphill journey, they are in need of our support! This will be a journey that the Shirk family will be dealing with for years to come. Lost wages, medical expenses, travel expenses, rehabilitation, prosthetics and all of the financial hardships associated with Darryl not being able to work for many months if not years will have a huge impact financially on Darryl and his family.  All donations will be used to cover lost wages, medical bills and basic life sustaining necessities.

As the doctors and medical staff work round the clock to help Darryl overcome and recover from this debilitating illness we ask that you find it in your heart to extend your support to Darryl in this critical time in his life. Please support Darryl, his wife Ellen and the Shirk family in their time of need!  Please share this with your friends and family!
