On July 8, 2019, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) family suffered a heartbreaking loss when Darren M. Monroe Sr. died in an accident on the Broad Street Line in Philadelphia. Mr. Monroe, 54, a 17-year member of the Track Department and Transport Workers Union Local 234, was an exemplary employee, mentor, trusted colleague and devoted family man. The pain of this tragedy continues for his family members, friends and coworkers.
Mr. Monroe was a dedicated husband and father. He is survived by his wife, LaSonia Monroe, and five children.
Mr. Monroe made the Track Department his work home, where his coworkers remember him as a professional, good friend, and someone always ready to help anyone in need. He was both a spiritual person, and generous in spirit. He made new friends wherever he went. One of his colleagues shared that he was known as a good listener and gave thoughtful advice to the younger members of the team when they came to him for direction. Another coworker recalled Mr. Monroe reaching out to him when he was a new employee on his first day working in the Track Department. Not only did he help train him on the basics of the job responsibilities, but he continued to encourage him to set goals and work hard to achieve them in both his personal and professional life.
Both the Transport Workers Union Local 234 and SEPTA management are working to support the family through this very difficult time. SEPTA General Manager Jeffrey D. Knueppel and Transport Workers Union Local 234 President Willie Brown ask that you keep the Monroe family in your thoughts and prayers, and consider making a contribution to help support the family as they deal with this tragedy.
