As he would say himself... Darol got the cancer, bladder cancer specifically.
At the end of January while on a trip Darol thought his urine was dark and was concerned. Upon returning from the trip he contacted a doctor who advised he go to the emergency room. After an examination at the ER, including a Cat scan, the doctor saw there was a mass in his bladder and referred him to a urologist. Four days later the urologist removed a tumor larger than a golf ball from his bladder. It was Sarcomatoid Carcinoma cancer, a hybrid of both Carcinoma and Sarcoma cancer cells.
The good news, he has a fantastic doctor that he really likes and they have a really good plan.
There are 2 options because of the nature of his cancer and the fact that the tumor had attached to the bladder wall.
* Partial cystectomy is the removal of part of the bladder. It is used to treat cancer that has invaded the bladder wall in just one area. Partial cystectomy is only a good choice if the cancer is not near the openings where urine enters or leaves the bladder.
* Radical cystectomy is the removal of the entire bladder, nearby lymph nodes (lymphadenectomy), part of the urethra, and nearby organs that may contain cancer cells.
After a lot of testing and discussion, his doctor has decided they will be starting with Partial, they will remove the section of his bladder that housed the tumor. They will have pathology testing the area they are removing during surgery to determine how much of the bladder they take out. They will continue to remove sections of his bladder until the pathology is clear. At a certain point in the procedure if they have removed a significant section they will adjust and do the radical removal. After the surgical procedures he will also have to have at least 1 rounds of chemotherapy.
Darol hasn't been able to work since the 1st of February. He is hoping to get to go back to work in June or July, it all depends on which procedure is preformed, how chemotherapy goes, and how quickly the bladder heals.
Being sick is expensive!!! While Darol has one of the best health cares plans there is, insurance doesn't cover everything for the procedure, care and just living. Darol is not one to ask for help, But I will!!! He needs our help. The next several months are going to be hard physically, emotionally, and financially. Add to that the stress of dealing with insurance companies, being in the hospital, receiving treatment, and trying to afford to live. It is practically impossible.I hope that every person who has laughed themselves silly with him can take a minute to help him now.
