SUPPORTING LOCAL EMERGING ARTISTS
JUNE 11-13
THE BARN AT THE MATHER HOMESTEAD, DARIEN

Darien High School has an amazing art program, and many Darien alumni have gone on to build their careers on their artistic talents. Our juried show and sale will be the first of its kind, allowing these homegrown, emerging artists to showcase their talent.

The Vision
The first Darien Alumni Art Show will feature select work of DHS alumni artists.  It will provide an inspiration to current Darien students, showing how art can continue to be a part of their lives after graduating from DHS. In a pandemic year, when these artists have lost many of the traditional pathways to draw attention to their work, the Show will also provide a much-needed opportunity to highlight their abilities,

The Show will also have a virtual component:  there will be a dedicated web site that will not only display the art, but will also highlight the artists themselves.

Finally, some of the artists will be selling their crafts at the Artisan Fair on Sunday June 13.

Crucially, all the proceeds of the art sales should go back to the artists themselves.  Because of this, we will be seeking  donations to cover the cost of hosting the show.

Our Artists
We have collected 17 artists and artisans, from high school graduation years ranging from 2010 to 2019, and displaying 43 pieces of art. Each artist will get the opportunity to tell their own story and talk about their creative journey through interviews, video studio tours, and written artist statements.  You can see them at www.darienalumniart.com.

Our Jury
Pieces in the show will be selected by three Darien artists:

Andrea Bonfils (AndreaArtStudio.com) is a contemporary American artist, who lives and works between Darien, CT and Sante Fe, New Mexico. Her practice includes mixed media, photography and encaustics and is driven by a desire to evoke sensation, play with our perceptions, and see our interconnected nature.

Jaclyn Sammis is an artist who lives and works in Darien.  Her work includes textiles, painting and ceramic forms. Additionally, she is the current Department Chair of the K-12 Darien Public Schools.  Her work often starts as a demonstration for her students at Darien High School.  She will give the project criteria, then challenge herself to go beyond those requirements to show the students multiple solutions to a creative problem.

Luke Whittaker (thelukewhittaker.com) is an emerging artist currently living and working in Providence, Rhode Island with a studio at the Nicholson File Company Art Studios. He grew up in Darien, and recently graduated from RISD.  He obsesses over figuration in everyday experiences, capturing a feeling, moment, position or scene. The goal of his work is to pull the physical body out of the mediums he uses. His physical paintings and drawings always find a new life through the digital collages he creates from photographs of them.
