Help Dara Study Abroad in Ghana
Hey Family and Friends! I am a student at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) where I am focusing my studies in Communications, Political Science, Africana and African Studies. I feel so blessed to have been accepted into Pitt’s Study Abroad Program and this summer I will be studying in Ghana with an African Studies Professor and a team of students. I’m excited that I will have an opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of West Africa from a social, cultural, political, economic and artistic perspective. The Pitt in Ghana Program is divided into 2 sections with one week spent at Pitt in classes covering Ghanaian culture and languages and 5 weeks in Ghana.
One goal that I wish to accomplish during my study abroad experience in Ghana is to gain a deeper understanding of West African culture and society, and then be able to compare that to American culture. As an African American woman with an interest in politics, this would be a phenomenal experience to have. Another goal is to learn more about one of my passions, African dance. As a dancer, I am trained in many different genres of dance, including African dance. I believe that all forms of dance stem from African dance in some way, so expanding my knowledge of the art form would be very beneficial. To be able to learn it from people of whom African dance is a part of their everyday life would be an unparalleled experience. Lastly, I want to gain a deeper connection with the land of my ancestors, their culture and their traditions.
Studying abroad is an invaluable experience, but a costly one. Below is a breakdown of the costs.

Airfare $1,502
Local Transportation & Personal Expenses $900

Scholarship Received $2,000
