PERMISSION WAS OBTAINED DIRECTLY FROM DAPHNEE CHARLES TO DISCLOSE HER PERSONAL MEDICAL INFORMATION.

I’m requesting your assistance in helping my friend and colleague Daphnee Charles. In 2016, Daphnee was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer. As of today she is cancer free, however, the disease stole her ability to function with any semblance of normalcy since.

This saga all began on September 20, 2016 when she complained about severe abdominal pain and nausea. I advised her to go to the emergency room where after a couple hours of observation and IV fluids, they released her. I directed her to return immediately to get imaging. The CAT scan revealed a large pelvic mass which was presumed to be fibroids. Daphnee returned to the office and tumor markers were ordered; they came back elevated.

She was referred to gynecology-oncology and was promptly scheduled her for an exploratory laparotomy, myomectomy and possible salpingo-oophorectomy and any necessary medical procedure. After undergoing the procedure,  she received the life changing news that she has ovarian cancer. As Daphnee processed this devastating news, she was left to decide whether to undergo another procedure that would eliminate any ability she would have to conceive a child. On December 19, 2016, at age 35, she underwent total hysterectomy, and had her last remaining ovary removed. Final pathology revealed a 2B ovarian serous carcinoma with local extension which would require chemotherapy. She got her chemo port placed and commenced chemotherapy for six months. This grueling regimen took significant toll on her.

After her procedures, Daphnee was in recovery and on leave from her job. She was reassured that it would be waiting for her when she completed her treatment. After her fifth of six chemo sessions, I saw her back in the office in May 2017 for follow up and to clear her to return to work. She was terminated before she could complete her final session.  Daphnee was devastated. Cancer didn’t take her life, but it took her ability to make a living for herself and provide for her family.

Daphnee was her family’s primary breadwinner. She recently purchased a home and was caring for an ailing parent. She lost her medical insurance and had to obtain Medicaid shared-cost. She's depleted her savings and no longer drives because she can’t afford the car insurance. Her family has done all that they can for her but have essentially reached the end of the line. Daphnee's job search has been unsuccessful so far and her bills continue to mount.

Through all of this turmoil Daphnee's faith never wavered. On July 12, 2017, Daphnee received the news that she had beaten the odds and that she was CANCER FREE! Daphnee has now been in remission for eight months and will undergo surveillance over the next five years. Anyone who finds it in the kindness of their heart to contribute would greatly be appreciated.  I'm also reaching out to any employers looking for a hard-working, trustworthy, and dependable bilingual primary care Physician assistant in the Dade or Broward county area. Please feel free to reach out as her resume/CV is available upon request. Thank you all and God bless! #DaphneeSTRONG
