Meet Sara, a curly haired, minecraft playing, cheerleading, ballet dancing, math wizard, and youngest of 5 siblings. On Dec. 12, 2012, after a routine check up, Sara was diagnosed with a Stage 3 Wilms tumor. We took a trip to Corpus Christi; Driscoll Children's Hospital, to prepare Sara for a nephrectomy. Dr's removed one of her kidneys, which was engulfed in a tumor. Sara spent the next few days in the hospital recovering. She was released on Christmas Eve so that we could celebrate Christmas day at home with family.
After her surgery, we started to prepare our baby girl for the next phase of her treatment. She underwent 7 days of radiation, that took a toll on her small body.
After radiation was done, we again prepared our baby girl for the start of her intense chemotherapy protocol. Sara was given 3 different types of chemo meds to help her battle the disease that was threatening to take her from us.
All through her sick and good days, during her chemotherapy, our baby girl endured and always REASSURED us....US... that she had this vicotry won. Sara kept busy by making appearances with Childrens Driscoll Hospital to bring awareness to childhood cancer. Sara was named a Driscoll Childrens Miracle Child for her strength and courage...Always with a smile that left us speechless.
Sara also accepted reading book donations for her Sara's Hope project. Books were given to kids battling childhood diseases and normal healthy kids too. Sara is an avid reader, and hoped to inspire other kids to read, especially if they were going through some scary and hard times with their health.
On July 5th, 2013, our baby girl went into complete remission and we celebrated her Victory of cancer!
The next few months had Sara very busy catching up on all her favorite pass times like cheerleading, and ballet. Sara joined the Upward Cheer Team at a local church. She cheered to her hearts content. In Feb. 2014, Sara had a part in Sonia Chapa's rendition of "Coppelia", where she played a toy in a the Toy Makers shop and a little girl at a wedding. In June 2014, she was featured in Sonia Chapas Year Review as a young "Elsa" from Disney's "Frozen".
In July 2014, Make A Wish granted Sara a trip to Disney World in Florida. Sara had the time of her life. She even conquered her fear of roller coasters by riding all the ones in which she met the height restriction. Life could not be better.
The day after we returned back from our vacation, Sara had her routine yearly CT exam. The follwoing day, we were given devastaing news... Doctors confirmed that our baby girls cancer was back, and in both lungs. Our world has come to a sudden halt once more. Sara cried for a while after hearing the news that she needed to go through her treatments again. Soon after, her tears became those of dermination....Determined to beat cancer once more!
Our baby girls new chemo protocol is far more aggressive than the one she had before. To hear the doctors tell us that her survival rate was between 50% to 60% has left us numb and in a surreal place right now. They included 8 days of intense radiation to the lungs, (which she has completed) and a long and hard chemotherapy process of 6 cycles. Each cycle includes 5 days of continued chemotherapy, followed by 2 weeks of recovery. She may have to go through more surgical procedures, depending on the effects of the chemo on the growths in her lungs. She will be administered 3 different types of chemo, and all types of medications that will help to counteract some of the side effects. She will lose all her hair, once more... I will shave mine. She will have to undergo blood transfusions throughout her treatment to help her immune system due to the aggressiveness of the medication. The process can take up to 8 months to complete which will include many trips to Corpus Christi, long stays, medication and lost time at work. We are hoping for the best, but preparing for a hard battle right next to her.
