In October of this year, our neighbor, Daniel Cantu suffered a major stroke in his sleep, and had to be transported by helicopter to St. David's Medical Hospital, in Austin, TX. This unfortunate event occurred just weeks after his wife, Guiselly Cantu, was diagnosed with cancer (stage 3), and was recovering from surgery she had done in September to remove tumors.
As Guiselly has been undergoing chemotherapy and caring for her children, she has had to be managing the hospitalization of Daniel, who underwent brain surgery and was initially given a 2% of chance to live. Thankfully, he has been defying the odds and is slowly beginning to show signs of improvement, but the road ahead is long and the expenses are mounting, not only from medical costs, but from the income lost from Daniel's hospitalization and Guiselly's work being impacted as she becomes the primary caretaker of her household.
In the coming months, Daniel will need to be transferred to longer-term care, and Guiselly continues to battle cancer, but insurance will not cover some of the most critical aspects of what will be needed by them both.
We are sharing their story, with their permission, because they need your help. Before their world turned upside down, they were our pleasant and active neighbors who always shared a warm smile or greeting even as they would move through their busy lives as professionals and parents. They would always walk hand-in-hand with their dogs in the evenings and recently celebrated their son's graduation from high school. In just the span of a few weeks, that all changed, and reminds us just how fragile and unpredictable life can be.
