A Mind Apart is dedicated to presenting performance and theatrical opportunities that are an integral part of the participants learning experience.
We work with children and young people from ages 5 - 20 years. Our work includes day sessions with young people not in education, employment or training (NEETs), where we train them in performing arts. We have found that this age group has low aspirations and what they perceive as their options. Our work supports them to re-evaluate their position in society while using creative techniques to develop their confidence and employability skill. We are currently partnering with an organisation in the North East of Brazil, called 'Agua Viva' in Olinda and want to offer young people both in Brazil and the UK opportunities to work together and learn from each others cultures. We would like to do this through exchange projects between young adults in Brazil and the young people we are working with in the UK. Not only do we support young people in receiving qualifications in performing arts, but we aim to offer them opportunities that help them reconsider their life choices and in turn develop personally.
We also deliver evening performing arts classes to children from ages 5 to 19. These focus on improving confidence and performance skills which includes drama, dance and singing. As well as using community space to make our services accessible to our students, we also have our own teaching/studio space which is used for teaching dance, drama and singing as well as classroom teaching around the theory of the performing arts. Currently this room does not have a suitable floor to teach dance in and we are limited to what we can do in the space, due to the surface being too hard for floor work and jumps. We are desperate need of a new surface for this floor and want to buy a Harlequin flooring that is portable so that we can use it for community performances and take it with us as we grow and move into larger spaces.
