Dan's Kidney Transplant

As many of you know ten years ago my husband, Daniel Martin, was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), an inherited disorder in which clusters of cysts develop within the kidneys, causing the kidneys to enlarge and lose function over time. For the last three years, he has been on peritoneal dialysis allowing him to continue his daily life as normal as possible and be the main provider for our family.

After losing over 200 pounds and resolving his high blood pressure, he was finally admitted onto a list at UNC-Chapel Hill, to possibly receive a kidney transplant. We are extremely proud of Daniel’s effort and success in losing weight and changing his lifestyle for the better. We look forward to receiving a new kidney and enjoying many more years of adventure with him by our side. We are fortunate our insurance (as far as we know) will cover the surgery and most of the treatment, however, we will still be faced with many other expenses not covered by insurance. What is most concerning for us is the travel expenses. We live 4.5 hours away from Chapel Hill, and we are looking at the possibility of up to six weeks of hotels, child care, and food in Chapel Hill, plus transportation back and forth from our hometown of Sylva.

This part is very difficult, but in this time of need and extra demands I am reaching out to our friends and family to help us. Please donate to expenses for travel and medical expenses. No matter how big or small, any donation helps. Dan, our son Raphael, and I will be forever thankful with you support.
