My mother, Damaris Diaz, died peacefully at Shands Hospital after being hospitalized for 112 days. Unfortunately, she went in for a "routine" heart surgery and resulted in death months later. This past summer, in mid-July, she had 2 heart surguries in 4 days which led to the 112 day suffering. My mother was a warrior and she fought every breath until the end. Our family experienced the battle with her every step of the way. We made the best possible decisions at the time to ensure that she get home as soon as possible.
During her stay at Shands, her body endured over 8 procedures! She died on 3 occasions before her final death. She had multiple infections, bronchitis and double pneumonia on different occasions.
Her body wasn't producing urine and the kidneys had failed numerous times and was put on CVHH/HD dialysis for months. At a time, after she had stomach surgery in September, she acquired hospital induced delirium from being put under anestesia so many times. Also, the incision on her chest from the heart surgery in July never closed! In fact, you could see the surgical wire holding the two inside walls together! The doctors poked her with an insane amounts of needles because of the condition that she was in it took multiple pokes to find a vein that would draw blood. The list of medications she was on is SUBSTANTIAL. Everything that could have went wrong did and she died from it.
I love my mother and despite how much adversity I've faced in my life, this was the biggest challenge by far. My mom was a jokester, she was real and always told it like it was. She was apart of the deaf community and touched many of her friends lives and impacted my life in such a beautiful way.
I started this GoFundMe to get funds to pay for the autopsy so I can get a better idea as to what exactly happened to her during her 112 day stay in the hospital. The autopsy is $3,700.00 and unfortunately, they're needing the money upfront and I'm having to pull the money together to make this happen.
