Hi there!

My name is Daisy and I am 17 years old. I'm a totally normal teenager who loves music and being with my friends, laughing and just being me. But, when you don’t have permanent upper teeth it’s hard to feel completely normal, I feel self-conscience at times. You see, I was born with bi-lateral cleft lip and palate. That's a long name for something super simple to explain. It's when the roof of my mouth, most of the front part of my upper jaw and lip and the front part of my nose just didn't want to show up for the party when I was in my mother’s womb, so I came into the world disfigured. So for pretty much all of my life I have been going through reconstructive procedures, 11 to be exact, to make me look like I do now. I need one more procedure to complete my many trips in and out of the OR. I need teeth!!! The implants that I require are completely permanent and will last for the rest of my life. Then there are the 2 crowns and the permanent bridge of four teeth I need in the front as well, which will last 15-20 years. These combined procedures are what I will require to lead a “normal” life. The only problem is that my health insurance does not cover any of the cost and it is way more money than what my mom can afford.

Dear Friends and Family,

Daisy Redmond, my beautiful 17 year old daughter, is a sweet, enthusiastic, kind, considerate and compassionate young lady who needs dental implants to successfully reach the end of a very long physical and emotional journey.

Born with a severe bi-lateral cleft lip and palate, Daisy's start in life was less than perfect.  So in love with her and excited to welcome her into the world, we knew she had a long road ahead and felt fortunate that her medical condition was operable.  To date, Daisy has endured 11 reconstructive surgeries, facing each one with great courage and strength.

The reconstructive process started with her lip repair when she was only 11 weeks old, you can only imagine how her father and I felt handing her over to the Cranial Facial team at VCU Medical Center that first time. Thankfully it was a success and gave Daisy the bright sincere smile we have been so fortunate to enjoy for the past 17 years. A short 9 months later she underwent a second surgery, her palate repair, which, at 12 months, gave her the ability to properly suck on a bottle for the first time.

Subsequently, she had to endure a surgery a year until she turned 10. Some of her procedures to date include an alveolar bone graft, premaxillary osteotomy, lip and nose tip revision, reconstructed ear canal, an additional palate repair, piriform aperture (cheek) implants and a new set of ear tubes with each surgery. We were always nervous prior to a procedure but also looked forward to moving ahead another step. Luckily our prayers have been answered along the way. It has helped that we have an enormous amount of respect for and faith in the team at VCU, including the dozens of doctors and staff, that we have been fortunate to get to know and trust over the years. They really have provided the best care possible for our baby, now a young lady.

So here we are 17 years later seeing light at the end of the tunnel.  Despite having only one tooth in front in her upper jaw, Daisy has always had a proud smile and an inspiring outlook on life. She only started wearing Pontic teeth as she entered high school so she would “fit in” a little better with her peers.  She is scheduled to have implant surgery on August 10th.  After 4 months of healing, her prosthodontist will implant 2 crowns which will support a permanent cast metal retainer to hold 4 porcelain Pontic teeth, which together would complete her smile.

It is unfortunate that insurance companies do not consider this a “quality of life” issue and will not cover any of the cost.  Both procedures combined come to a whopping $17,800.  As those of you who know me can imagine, this is an amount that far exceeds my budget.  It is hard sometimes when you can’t give your children what they want, but it is heart breaking when you can’t give them what they need. I am humbly asking for donations to help cover the cost of giving Daisy the smile and quality of life she deserves.

We are sincerely grateful for any donation, and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your assistance.  If you would, please pass this along to any friends or family you think might also like to help.

Lots of love to everyone,

Kate, Daisy and Kellan Redmond
