Daisy Pettles Women Writers House

The Daisy Pettles' Writers House is a donated 1920's vintage arts and crafts bungalow that offers month-long FREE writer's residencies to exceptional older (age 40+) women writers in need each year.

The Indie publisher, award-winning author, and philanthropist, Daisy Pettles , has donated the house, which belonged to her mother, to help women writers in need.

The writer's support fund provides women in financial need with a safe expense-free oasis---literally a house of their own---in which to create or polish their master works.

Loving patrons---Hey, that's you!---provide additional support for the talented (but financially challenged) women writers in residence through donations beginning as low as $10.

Why Support Women Writers?

1.    POVERTY WAGES

Full-time, published authors earn $12,400 per year.  To compare, fast food workers and dish washers, make, on average, $18,000 a year. (Author's Guild) (NBC News)

But women writers make 89 cents on the dollar compared to men. That’s like $11,036.

That’s below poverty level, especially if the writer lives in an urban area.

2.      Books by women are priced 45% lower than those by men (The Guardian)

3.    Women authors are significantly less likely to have their books reviewed by the publishing industry gatekeepers. (The Guardian)

4.      Books by women authors are significantly less likely to receive major book awards (University of Pennsylvania Study)

5.      Award-nominated books that feature girls or women as main subjects are much less likely to win awards, whether they are written by women or men,

6.    The majority of mothers are now breadwinners---42 percent of mothers were sole or primary breadwinners, bringing in at least half of family earnings in 2015. Nearly another one-quarter of mothers—22.4 percent—were co-breadwinners, bringing home from 25 percent to 49 percent of earnings for their families. This means that not only are women writers starving, but so too are their children suffering.

7.    This gender bias in wages and devaluation of women writers has been going on for two centuries unfettered. The Bronte Sisters Sure Could Write. But They Were, You Know, Girls.

Dateline 1840's: The Bronte sisters published under male pseudo-names and spent every penny they had to underwrite their own book launches. They earned a meager living while supporting their roust-about, drunken (writer) brother and their infirm father.

 What You Can Do

The Daisy Pettles Women Writers House is your chance to vote “NOT ON MY WATCH”, and tell women writers that we, as a nation, care about them and value the gift of literacy and the freedom it brings. Donations as small as $10 will literally help keep the lights on.

The house has been donated by the writer, and social entrepreneur Daisy Pettles, BUT $2,850 is needed annually to pay the critical expenses –-- internet, heat, etc. Writer application fees ($45 for each applicant) help provide this, BUT many women writers can’t afford that fee.

A donation as small as $10, when crowd-funded and pooled, will provide a chance for women writers in need to apply for a residency and change their lives – perhaps the world – with their words.

This is your chance ... join Daisy's Team ... help women writers crowd-fund a better future for all women.

If not you, who?
