DAD'S STORY
Dad is from New Zealand. He's a healthy male in his late 50s. He's husband to Sue, as well as Dad to us, Michelle & Tania, and recently discovered he had Prostate Cancer - this fundraiser will help him fund treatment outside New Zealand, and in the process help others in a similar situation. **NOTE** You may have noticed that the name of a different beneficiary (Terry Schell) pops up when you visit this fundraiser. FEAR NOT!! As you will see when you read on, we needed to set up a US-based fundraiser because Dad's treatment will be based in the USA. Because we're from NZ, we couldnt do this ourselves, so we asked one of our very good friends in the USA, Mr Terry Schell, to create the account for us. Terry has been unbelievably generous to us with this fundraiser, and we are so happy to be able to recognise him publicly for the support he has given already. We really couldn’t be doing this without him!!

Dad was first diagnosed with high PSA levels in 2006. Around the same time, he also discovered he had high cholesterol. Determined that he didn't want to be on a tablet-a-day for the rest of his life, he decided to research alternative treatments for elevated cholesterol and PSA. During the process, he discovered the benefits of how simply changing one's diet can be as effective as taking medication. He was able to dramatically decrease his cholesterol to 'safe' levels within a matter of months, and subsequently his PSA also fell.
It was something that Dad knew he would always have to monitor, but now knew how to control.
Then, this year, the beast returned when his doctors told him that there was an 'anomaly' on his prostate gland. They told him he immediately needed to have a biopsy to make 100% sure it was cancer, then they could operate to take it out.
Now, Dad has travelled this route before. And aside from the severe discomfort, bleeding, and other horrific risks that come along with biopsies, Dad knew he didn't want to have a biopsy. So after much protestation from his GP, Dad and his doctors eventually agreed that there was a 95% chance he had prostate cancer.
Obviously, the threat to his health has meant that Dad has been searching for a means of treatment for the past few months. Luckily, he’s found a place for treatment in California, USA which is currently exhibiting incredibly high rates of success for treating & 'curing' prostate cancer. He has spoken with the specialist who runs the clinic, and they are both confident that with the necessary time and dedication, Dad will be back to being a fully functional, healthy human being within the next 12 months. The specialist has recommended 5-6 months of intensive treatment at his facility, and is confident that after treatment, Dad will likely have another 35 - 40 years of life expectancy (probably an even greater prognosis than previously, considering the battering his body has gone through after the years on the road in the rock-band, the bungy jumps, travel to far-distant mosquito-ridden lands and other such life changing and wonderful adventures).
We're all 100% behind Dad with this treatment, because we need him to have the best chance of survival. That's why we want to send him to another country for the treatment. There is nowhere in New Zealand that even comes close to being able to provide the success rate for treatment of prostate cancer than the clinic in the USA.
Which is why we're using Dad as a guinea pig – if the treatment works, we want to bring it to New Zealand for the benefit of other sufferers in this region of the world. We also want to spread awareness about alternative treatments in the meantime.
The only problem is that the treatment costs alone are USD$30,000 per month. With a 5-6 month treatment plan, this means USD$180,000 just to get Dad healthy! Then, there are the travel and living costs that go along with that.
That means we need to raise a grand total of USD$200,000 to cover the cost of Dad's treatment. Unfortunately, time is pressing, and we need to raise the first couple of months' treatment before Christmas, otherwise Dad will lose his place on the waiting list.
So we're asking you, your family, your friends, your colleagues, your acquaintances – everyone you know – to simply **D.A.D. (Donate a Dollar.) 4 Dad**. That’s all. Just one single solitary dollar. We only need 200,000 people to D.A.D to completely fund Dad's treatment.
We're also hoping that you might consider Donating a Dollar for each month of Dad's treatment. Dad needs a minimum of 5 months treatment, so why not donate $5 now, to cover all of Dad's treatment. If everyone who donated gave $5, we'd only need 40,000 donations to get Dad to the US.
We know we can achieve this, with your help!!
