YAMASA’S MOM & BABY PROGRAM
Administered by Friends For Life International – a registered Canadian Charity

Please help us reach our goal to provide medical help and sustenance to 150 women and their babies in the 8 bateyes and communities within the impoverished region of Yamasa, Dominican Republic.

In April 2014, we went on a recognizance trip to take stock of their needs for ourselves. We came home with many heart-wrenching stories. This is what some of the moms had to say:

"This program is a gift from God. The only help I receive.”

Mariana Perez - 34 years old; Batey El Cano. Mariana's husband abandoned her when he found out she was pregnant with their 6th child.

"I learnt how to feed my baby properly. I was taught that I am only to breastfeed my baby till she is 6 months old. I did not know I was not supposed to feed my newborn solid foods."

Mariline – 19 years old; Batey El Cano.

Mariline's daughter is 2.5 years old. She has a cranial deformity. This toddler was very sick as a baby and is now doing well thanks to the "Yamasa Mom & Baby" Program. She does have a problem with one of her eyes and remains in the program to benefit from priceless medication.

Our doctors in the field confirm the harsh reality of these families:

"Since the program is in the bateyes, the mortality rate has diminished for moms and babies... these expectant mothers are simply not able to pay the $10 to $15 transport cost into downtown Yamasa for a medical appointment." Dr Indira Sigaran Hernandez.
