Breakfast is fully BOOKED!

Tax deductible
We would like to express our extreme gratitude to everyone who donated and shared news of the campaign in aid of nourishing the minds of more young children. We have managed to raise £7669 which will allow us to support at least TWELVE new Breakfast Book Clubs! The success of the campaign means that alongside their breakfast, hundreds of children in disadvantaged areas will also receive a book to read, the perfect way to start the school day. Schools may be the only place for some young children to access books and explore the world of fiction.

Our crowdfunding campaign, Breakfast is fully BOOKED! launched last Monday and the response we have received in only a week has been incredible. We initially set out to raise money to start ten new Breakfast Book Clubs in 2021. With our target of £6000 nearing in sight so early on, we have decided to stretch ourselves and hope to raise £8000!

The primary schools we help are often in areas of highest deprivation and these communities have been particularly hard hit by the impact of COVID-19.

“Research suggests the gap between disadvantaged pupils and their more privileged counterparts has widened significantly.” (BBC news 02/11/2020)

With the closure of libraries and bookshops during this next lockdown phase, schools remaining open may be the only place where some young children can access and explore the world of fiction. Our Breakfast Book Clubs will provide this essential opportunity, nourishing the minds of more young children.

This new goal will allow us to set up more Breakfast Book Clubs to create that time for children to read for pleasure. Books transport us to new and wonderful places, something which has been particularly important and comforting this year when we have not been able to travel far.

Who is Give a Book?

Give a Book is a charity that promotes books and the pleasure of reading in the hardest places. Our core belief is that to pass on a good read – to give a book – is a transaction of lasting worth. Our main areas of work are in prisons, schools and with disadvantaged children & young people throughout the UK. Give a Book works in partnership with other charities and groups to set up reading projects, choosing age-appropriate, specially selected books for projects. We provide creative, innovative ways of leading to reading and offer practical solutions to encourage an enjoyment of reading. We often work in areas or circumstances of significant deprivation.

What are Breakfast Book clubs?
Children need a healthy breakfast. Give a Book works with schools so that children can read a book with their breakfast. The primary schools we seek to help are in areas of high deprivation and have pupils from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds who have little or no access to books or writing materials at home.

We have so far set up more than thirty Breakfast Book Clubs in schools. We are keen to launch more Breakfast Book Clubs to provide nourishment for the mind and the body and to create time for the  enjoyment of reading in 2021. Some examples of this impact:

"The books from ‘Give a Book’ have been very much appreciated by the children and their families. Books are not always a high priority for many of our families so it is good to know that the children have received quality books appropriate to their age and level.”

“The Breakfast Book Club has been going really well so far and is really making a difference to the children as many of them do not have access to books at home.”

“J comes into school more focussed when he has been to Breakfast Book Club, he has grown in confidence in class and most definitely in reading. It’s a lovely way for him to start his day.”

Why are they needed?

A number of studies show that poor reading skills are linked to social and economic disadvantage.  25 % of children left primary school in 2018 unable to read at the expected level and it is estimated that there are nine million working aged adults in England with low literacy or numeracy skills or both. (DofE 2018 and OECD 2016)

There are certain areas where books and reading are not part of the everyday home life of many children, and Breakfast Book Clubs can fill that gap. This year, the Covid-19 crisis has had a huge global impact, and in these unsettling, worrying times, books can provide a welcome distraction and escape. The schools that we work with are often in areas of highest deprivation. These communities have been particularly hard hit by the impact of COVID-19. While schools and libraries were closed, there was often little or no access to learning support, often households had few or no books, there were food shortages, lack of internet access. It was and is still an uncertain time for everyone. Now, with pupils having missed months of schooling, an even bigger disadvantage gap has been created and the need for our work will be even greater.

HELP US CHANGE THE STORY

In 2021 Give a Book would like to raise £6000 to start ten new Breakfast Book clubs in primary schools across the UK, reaching hundreds of children from disadvantaged backgrounds. One Breakfast Book Club costs £600 to set up which provides more than a hundred new books as well as pencils, notebooks and bookmarks to encourage the children to engage and have more fun with their reading.

Help us to reach our target!

The Give a Book team have put together a selection of rewards for the first donation of certain amounts we receive during this campaign:

• A £20.00 donation for a Give a Book tote bag (limited availability)

• A £50.00 donation for a copy of ‘The Pleasure of Reading’ by Antonia Fraser (Give a Book Patron) AND signed by Antonia Fraser (limited availability)

 Experience rewards

For the first donation of £200.00 we are offering that individual a zoom call with a publisher from Penguin Random House and one of our trustees Selina Walker who will provide feedback on a piece of written work of no longer than 3000 words - ideal for an aspiring writer.

For the first two donations of £300.00, one will get to visit and participate in one of our Breakfast Book Clubs and one will be able to visit and participate in one of our Prison Reading Groups.
