On August 11th, 2014 our beautiful little baby girl Lilly was at her pediatrician's doing a routine checkup. Everything was seemingly going well until our pediatrician discovered a 4x5 cm mass on the right side of her abdomen. He immediately advised us to go have an ultrasound done as soon as possible.
We arrived at St. Joseph Children’s Hospital of Tampa, FL that evening and the ultrasound was performed. The ultrasound did confirm a mass on her liver. We were told not to panic, most masses on the liver in children her age are benign tumors called hemangiomas. An MRI was ordered for the next morning to confirm what we were facing.
On August 12th, 2014 Lilly was sedated in order to perform an MRI. As parents we had never been so scared in our lives watching our little girl be put to sleep. About an hour later the MRI results were shared with us. It was not a hemangioma, they were unsure of what it was and a biopsy had to be ordered.
On August 13th, our little girl was sedated once again in order to perform a liver biopsy to see what this mysterious mass was. We tried to stay optimistic and prayed it was not cancerous.
On August 14th, an oncologist came to see us to share with us the results of biopsy. Our entire world was turned upside down when the doctor told us that our 15 month baby girl had cancer. Lilly was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer known as Hepatoblastoma. This form of cancer affects just 1 in a million children a year.
Lilly is currently in Stage 3 of the Hepatoblastoma, surgery is not an option at this moment. She will receive 6 rounds of Chemotherapy in hopes that the tumor will shrink in order to become operable. She began the 1st dose of Chemotherapy on August 15th.
We are staying optimistic that our little girl will pull through this and beat this rare form of cancer. Her initial prognosis is very good with a 60-70% survival rate. We just ask that you pray for our little girl as much as possible. We are also very appreciative of any monetary donations; we know that it will be very costly to beat this cancer.
Your donations will go towards all of her medical bills as well as hearing aids for Lilly. Unfortunately at her young age, hearing loss is an almost guaranteed side effect of Cisplatin (her primary chemotherapy drug). We have been advised by our oncologist to prepare for this in advance. Donations will also go towards her new diet and overall well-being. Thank you to everyone who donates or just says a simple prayer.
