Help fix a broken kitty.

Pickles is much like any other cat, though her origin is a little rougher than some. I found Pickles at the loading dock dumpster of a nearby hospital, starving and dehydrated, with no momma cat or siblings to keep her safe. When I caught her, she bit through my thumb, and was just generally frightened half to death. After a couple hours though, she was a playful, ornery little kitten.

The first story is from March, 2013, today her story is even more tragic and terrible. We live in a semi-enclosed townhome/apartment complex, and there's lots of room for Pickles to explore and chase squirrels. The only road in does not have an outlet, and she generally stays within a few hundred feet of our home. Thursday, August 14th, Pickles was taken by an unfriendly person, driven more than seven miles from our home, and cruelly, carelessly thrown out of a moving car on the upper deck of I-35. The fall was about 40 feet, and she landed in the middle of the access road below, breaking both femurs on her hind legs. Her vet says they're two of the worst fractures she's ever seen. Pickles fall was witnessed by a motorist driving on the access road, who watched her crawl to a nearby tree, and called Austin Animal Control. AAC picked her up and took her to the Austin Animal Center, who contacted me from her microchip.

After contacting every veterinary orthopedic surgeon I could get on the phone on a Friday, Pickles situation looked grim as I would not be able to afford the several thousands of dollars I was told it would cost. Once Pickles was moved from the Animal Center to her vet's clinic, other people started asking favors on her and my behalf, securing an orthopedic surgeon for Monday, August 18th. This very gracious Dr. has agreed to perform Pickles surgery pro-bono, with the only cost to me being the materials used. It's still a lot of money, and the grand total will be in the neighborhood of $1,400. I'm asking you to help raise half the cost of her surgery, we would both be eternally grateful. If our goal is exceeded, I will used the rest to pay for as much of Pickles surgery as I can, if that amount is exceeded, I'll donate the rest of it to a local animal service, Austin Animal Center or Austin Pets Alive.
