Hello, my name is Dana Thomas and this is my story. I'm one of 10 children, yes 10!!. As you can imagine there was never a dull moment growing up; from the laughter, to tears, to supporting each other's dreams. I was surrounded by so much love and though we didn’t have much, we always had and still have each other. The two most important people in my life are my mom and dad. Raising one child can be a struggle, but 10, come on, that's a job within itself. It's because of this my parents symbolize strength, and I adore them. They always taught us the value of family and success, and most importantly putting God first in our lives. My family has always been my support system through it all: the good, the bad, and the ugly.
One of my professors once asked me what was a child hood memory that I would never forget. I instantly thought of the time my mom took us outside in the snow, we had a blast. Though this may not seem that exciting or cool, I will never forget it because there was a time when I witnessed my mom walk down the street in agony. She could barely walk down one single block because she had no cartilage in both her hips. That memory of her being able to run and jump and play brings me joy because for many years she could not do that. In excruciating pain she pressed on and worked, she never let her pain prevent her from working or doing her motherly duties. About 2 years ago she was forced to retire because she got a total hip replacement on both sides and wasn’t rewarded enough sick leave to fully recover. This put a huge financial strain on my family.
My mom only receiving one check a month left my dad to handle all of the financial obligations. Now my dad just recently lost his job, putting even more of a financial strain of my family. Every loan we've applied for has been denied. I'm a senior in college and a psychology major. It tears me up inside that this is my last year and I might not be able to complete it. I'm two semesters away from my degree and I refuse to quit or give up hope. My whole life I’ve always had the desire to help people. My best friend lost her mom at 13 years old and from then on I’ve become her back bone. Nobody could mess with her, or they would have it. The thing about our friendship that hit home with me the most is for so many years I’d watch her let people walk all over her because of how nice she is. It's because of that that I always had her back. So to watch her now, turn into this young woman who stands up for herself is like a mom hearing their child talk for the first time. I vowed to myself that I would be a psychologist who helped young women who suffered from lose of a loved one, rape, abuse both verbal and psychical, and poverty; so that, just like with my best friend, I would come to their recue and help them to find their place in this world in spite of their circumstances.
Failure is not an option and with the support of people all over the world I pray that I can finish my education. Education is very important and I will strive to reach my goals in every area of my life. Thank you to those who have the heart and the willingness to donate. May God bless and keep you.
In conclusion, singing is another one of my passions and above this message is a link to a video of me singing. It is my hope that as you guys are a blessing to me, sharing my gift will be a blessing to you.
