William Shogran Jr., passed away unexpectedly on August 13th, following a practice at football camp in North Florida. William is the son of Florida Highway Patrol Trooper William Shogran. Please help us provide the family with whatever expenses they will face. Our hearts & thoughts are with the entire Shogran family, friends of this beloved young man, as well as the entire Sebsatian River High School.
GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. - The Clay County Sheriff's Office said a 14-year-old football player from a central Florida high school died Wednesday after working out with his team at Camp Blanding.
Officials said William Shogran Jr., from Sebastian River High School in Indian River County, told his coaches he was not feeling well and was allow to take a break from the morning practice.
"When he vomited, that's when one of the coaches felt it was serious enough to call 911," spokeswoman Mary Justino said. "(The student) was conscious and breathing at that time. But certainly their concern was he was having some type of heat-related episode."
Rescue personnel attempted CPR, then transported the boy to Shands Regional Medical Center in Starke, but he could not be revived.
News4Jax confirmed that Shogran is the son of a Florida Highway Patrol trooper.
What was described as a team-building camp was being held on the parade ground of the base, but organized and run by the school's football coaches.
While some of the coaches went to Starke to be with the boy's family at the hospital, other coaches stayed with the team at Camp Blanding until late afternoon, when they boarded buses to head back to Vero Beach.
Bill Fritz, assistant superintendent of the Indian River County school district, said they got a call late morning that a player was in medical distress, then learned that the ninth-grate student had died.
"The School District and Sebastian River High School communities are deeply saddened by this news," Fritz wrote in a statement.
The Sheriff's Office said the medical examiner in Alachua County would conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
