D'Sean Belisle's Funeral Fund and Family Support

D'Sean Belisle went to Heaven on August 9, 2020. He was only 24-years old and had courageously battled Sickle Cell Disease his whole life. To us, he was considered family. D'sean met my brother, Daniel when they were in the 8th grade. They became great friends and spent a lot of time together hanging out, going to Laker games, watching Laker games on TV, playing video games, taking college courses together, going to theme parks, traveling, and so much more. D'Sean was at the Camacho house all of the time and we loved having him over. My parents always referred to D'Sean and Daniel as "my boys" and loved D'Sean like a son. Vanessa, Daniel, and I considered him a brother. We would do anything for our D'Sean.

For those of you who are not aware of what Sickle Cell Disease is, it is a disease that affects red blood cells by making them hard, sticky, and C-shaped, and mostly affects people of African descent. Normal red blood cells are round and easily carry oxygen throughout the body. With Sickle Cell Anemia, the misshapen red blood cells die early, lead to a shortage of healthy red blood cells, and block blood flow because the C-shaped red blood cells get stuck in the blood vessels. This causes excruciating pain and prevents the flow of blood and oxygen throughout the body. Without proper blood flow, the body goes into a "sickle cell crisis" where various parts of the body suffer due to a lack of oxygen and blood flow. A sickle cell crisis can cause organ failure, stroke, and even premature death.

Last year, he went through a sickle cell crisis that caused him to lose his hearing. We communicated with him by typing on our phone and showing it to him. A few months ago D'Sean text me and said he was physically ok, but mentally he was not. He said that he wished he could go back to work and school but he was being held back by his health problems.

Although D'Sean was frequently in excruciating pain, he didn't want to be a burden to anyone and never complained. Many times he would try to hide his pain because he didn't want his family and friends to worry. He wanted so badly to work and continue his education, but his disease robbed him of his health and strength. He spent most of his life in and out of the hospital, which prevented him from living a normal life. His friends describe him as soft-spoken, kind, incredibly patient, a great listener, very caring, non-judgmental, and extremely supportive.

His mother, Nadia McDougall, admired his strong character and his tenderness. How he never wanted his family to worry and would always say "I'll take care of it". She said he loved his younger brother very much and watched over him, reminding him to take his medications and made sure he was ok. He also adored his grandmother, who is partially blind, and helped care for her and always worried about her safety. Nadia says D'Sean gave her strength.

Nadia is a hard-working single mother and takes care of her mom and son Josh, who also battles Sickle Cell Anemia. Josh is 15 years old and, like D'Sean, spends a lot of time in and out of the hospital. Her mother, Lorna, is 78-years old and has a lot of health issues. She is partially blind and requires a lot of care. Nadia is a certified nursing assistant and travels 80 miles roundtrip to Los Angeles to support her family. Even with his illness, D'Sean was a big help with caring for Lorna and Josh while Nadia worked.

D'Sean wanted to be able to financially support his family and always worried about them. We beg you to help make his wish come true. Please donate to Nadia and her family to help pay for D'Sean's funeral expenses, to help her focus on keeping Josh healthy and living a long life, and to continue caring for her mother, Lorna.

All funds will go directly to D'Sean's mother, Nadia.
