Three nights ago it was brought to my attention that there was a homeless family in Sonoma desperately looking for somewhere to stay. My husband, my son (10), and my daughter (5) opened up our home and they have been with us since and they have been such a joy! Joshua is a single dad raising his three children: Hunter, 12; Angela, 10; and Emma, 5. When they arrived at our house they only had several bags of items.
The family is so sweet. They have gone through so much yet are such humble, grateful people. When they first arrived at our house Emma ran up to me and hugged me for a few minutes even though I had never met her. They were all so happy to have a home to stay in. They got up early and made their beds and the kids are really excited about having structure in their lives. They are begging me to add them to the chore chart to where they can have chores to do. The night after they got there we were all sitting at the table and were talking about the most exciting part of our day (something my family does every night). Here were their responses:
Hunter: "It felt so great to sleep in a bed because I don't remember the last time that I slept in one. It feels like we are on vacation at a hotel."
Angela: "I was so happy when we pulled up at your house yesterday and you made us feel like we are your family."
Emma (remember she is 5, this is as many things as I could remember her saying as it literally took her 5 minutes to recite everything she was happy about): "I really like your puppy, and your house, and your family, and your couch, and I get to take my shoes off, and your daughter gave me pajamas, and I like sitting on your lap, and when you read me a story, and I got to take a bath, and you left the light on at night, and you let me play on the computer, and you give me hugs when I ask for them, and you have a yard, and can I keep you"
Joshua: "I woke up this morning and I actually feel safe. I don't have to worry about where we are going to sleep tonight."
We are trying to raise money to help them with any necessities they still need as well as a deposit to be able to rent a house or an apartment. Our community has rallied together to be able to provide the children with clothing and school supplies to where they are able to begin school on Monday the 18th.
