"Saakasu" My new creation

Hello friends and family,

I want to share with you all my small, but satisfying, achievements from the past few years. At the same time, I am asking for your help to reach the next objective in my professional life.

Two years ago, I created a duet piece called "(Des)pair." This piece was created for a Student Choreography Concert at The Ailey School, where it was selected to be represented later in the year throughout the community. Following this, I decided to apply for the Dance Gallery Festival in New York City. The piece was chosen and won the Audiece Award. Four months ago, "Instituto de Cultura de Puerto Rico" commissioned the work and it was performed by students of School for the Performing Arts under the direction of Waldo Gonzalez.

These experiences have motivated me to continue in the choreography world with new goals, which will allow me to grow as a choreographer and represent my country.

This year, I am challenging myself and have started to create a group piece I am calling "Saakasu," which mean Circus in Japanese. I cannot describe how excited I am. Here I share with you some details of my new work. Hopefully, this will help you to understand the enormous undertaking and inspire you to assist me in this project.

The new work will have 4 sections, and I want to use specific characters of the circus to explore new movement. I have a very clear idea in my head of this journey that starts with something animalistic and ends with something very elegant. I want to bring a very individual experience to the audience. I have my own story, but I want to create a space that allows the audience to create their own. I love the physicality and the technical part of movement, but this needs to be attached to emotions in my work. With this piece, the dancers will experience different emotions, especially joy. In my opinion, "enjoy yourself" needs to be part of the process. That way the dancers can invest their time, learn from themselves, and of course bring a real experience onstage. I have already started working on each section, and I am very excited to see how the piece turns out.

As some of you know, the creation of a piece costs a lot of money. I need to spend money on rental space, costumes, make-up, lighting design and, if possible, pay my dancers, even if is not much. I feel blessed because of the people that want to be part of this process: Shelby Colona, Rachel Secrest, Elena d'Amario, Ian Spring, Alonso J. Guzman, Eoghan Dillon, Michael Bagne, Zoey Anderson, Sarita Apel, Keiko Voltaire (costume designer) and Nilda Pilar (lighting designer). All of these individuals are wonderful young artists, and I want to make this experience the best possible for them.

The goal is get to raise $2,000. With you help, we can make my vision a reality. $100.00 is great, but even $1.00 brings us closer to our goal.

Queridos amigos y familiares:

Quiero compartir con ustedes mis pequeños, pero satisfactorios, logros que he tenido en mis últimos años de estudiante de baile, y a la vez, pedirles que me ayuden a cumplir mi nueva meta en mi vida estudiantil y profesional.

Hace dos años creé una pieza de baile titulada (Des)pair para el "Student Choreography Concert" en la escuela de "Alvin Ailey" y fue seleccionada para representar la escuela en otras actividades. Unos meses después solicité en el festival de danza "Dance Gallery Festival" en New York City. En esta ocasión la pieza fue escogida y ganó el "Audience Award", por lo que me otorgaron el privilegio de crear un nuevo trabajo coreográfico sin tener que solicitar. Hace cuatro meses el Instituto de Cultura de Puerto Rico comisionó mi trabajo coreográfico y fue presentado por los estudiantes de School for the Performing Arts bajo la dirección de Waldo Gonzalez.

Estas experiencias me han motivado a continuar en este campo de la coreografía con nuevos retos que me permitan crecer como coreógrafo para representar a mi país.

Este año me he propuesto crear una pieza grupal: "Saakasu" que significa Circo en japonés. Ni que decir lo emocionado que estoy por esta experiencia. A grandes rasgos comparto con ustedes algunos de los detalles de mi nuevo trabajo, con el objetivo de que comprende la dimensión del mismo, y el porqué de mi solicitud de ayuda.

Este nuevo trabajo se divide en 4 movimientos y utilizaré personajes específicos de un circo para explorar nuevos movimientos. Es una travesía que comienza con un ambiente animalista y termina con uno muy elegante. Quiero brindar una experiencia individual al público. Aunque me inspiro en una historia, quiero crear un espacio que permitirá al público crear la suya propia. La belleza de la danza permite que el aspecto físico y técnico se compenetren con el mundo de emociones del ser humano. De esta manera los bailarines pueden sentir en vez de copiar. En mi opinión "disfrutarse a uno mismo" necesita ser parte del proceso creativo. Así los bailarines pueden aprender de ellos mismos y, por supuesto, regalar al público un espectáculo real. Ya empecé a trabajar en diferentes secciones y estoy muy emocionado por ver el resultado final.

Como muchos de ustedes ya saben, la creación de una pieza cuesta mucho dinero. Necesito invertir en renta de espacio para ensayo, vestuarios, maquillajes, diseño de luces y ,si es posible, pagar a mis bailarines aunque no sea mucho. Me siento bendecido por las personas que creen en mi trabajo y serán parte del mismo: Shelby Colona, Rachel Secrest, Elena d'Amario, Ian Spring, Alonso J. Guzman, Eoghan Dillon, Michael Bagne, Zoey Anderson, Sarita Apel, Keiko Voltaire (diseñadora de vestuario) y Nilda Pilar (diseñadora de luces). Todos estos individuos son magníficos artistas jóvenes y quiero hacer de esta experiencia para ellos la mejor posible.

El Dance Gallery Festival será en Octubre y queremos llegar a la meta de $2,000. Con tu ayuda podemos lograrlo.

En momentos donde todo parece negro y sumamente difícil para todos niños, jóvenes y adultos, necesitamos creer en nosotros mismos y creer en todos los campos de la vida humana para fortalecer nuestra existencia. Hoy más que nunca debemos poner al servicio de todos nuestros dones para construir un mundo mejor.

Son estas las razones que me mueven a dirigirme a ustedes para que me ayuden a poner a servicio de mi país y de otras personas los dones que Dios me ha dado.
