Medical costs for Monika

Donation protected
Dear family, friends, and colleagues,

My Tia (Aunt) Monika has been diagnosed with lung cancer that has now spread to her liver. Monika Montoya Schafer is my mother’s youngest sibling. She is only 41-years-old. She lives in Guatemala City and is a single mother of three young children: Ashley, Hannalie, and Adolfo.

My Tia Monika was born three years before her own mother lost a battle to cancer. Raised by her older sisters, she is woman dedicated to helping and supporting her family: todo para la familia. She put herself through school and is a trained physical therapist and masseuse. It is a noble and challenging job in Guatemala, but it barely makes ends meet (one can forget paid sick leave). As a mother, Monika never allowed muggings, bus hijackings, and street crime in Guatemala City deter her from going to work every day to put in long, demanding hours and provide for her children. They adore her and look forward to seeing their mama at the end of the day.

Monika is tough as she is meek and humble. She has always been a survivor, and I never witnessed a complaint from her – not even this summer as her health declined so quickly. Recently, her only request has been to have a few red apples and some magazines to read as she waits to see her babies during visiting hours…

I am blessed to be surrounded by so many fierce, resilient women in my family, and I have admired particularly my Tia Monika’s determination and humility while facing so many obstacles growing up, living, and working in Guatemala City. I wish she did not have to jump another hurdle, especially cancer in country with such an unegalitarian healthcare system. One must “pay up” in order to get proper and dignified treatment in Guatemala. My family and I are trying our best to support her from the U.S., but it has not been easy or enough. It is on behalf of my family, my Tia Monika, Ashley, Hannalie, and Adolfo, that I request whatever contributions may be possible for you today. We extend our heartfelt thanks, in advance, for your support, thoughts, and prayers.

Estimados parientes, amigos y colegas,
