Cyclone Gita Relief Efforts -Tonga

Donation protected
Last week on the night of February 12th, my home island was hit by tropical cyclone Gita; it was the most terrifying experience for many of us and one we will never forget. Gita left hundreds homeless including many in my village and neighborhood.

Some have found shelter with close relatives, others have tents or merely tarpaulin over their heads. During the day, the hot humid weather burns through these tents/tarps and when it rains, almost everything is wet. Our main source of food are the crops/plantations and they have been left devastated with food supply to last for only a few more weeks or days for most families.

We have been cleaning up and organizing the resources we already have and sharing  them, but it will not be enough to meet the needs of so many families in my village. I am therefore reaching out and asking for your help so we can rebuild temporary shelters and get food supplies for the families in my village until they can get back on their own two feet and provide for themselves.

All money donated will be used for purchasing building and food supplies only. I will be responsible for reporting and updating every week the work we are currently doing and will continue to do. The bank account we use is monitored by the Senior Manager of Finance for the National Reserve Bank of Tonga. He has no ties whatsoever to my village but will oversee, monitor and keep me accountable for every dollar. The daily work we do is reported to a committee in the village including the Town officer and church leaders. You will also be updated via Facebook or email should you desire for a more detailed breakdown of expenses and reports.

Ofa lahi atu one and all. Thank you in advance for considering our plea.

About me:
My name is Haitelenisia Uhila Angilau. I am married to a wonderful husband and we have a girl who will be turning 2 years old in July. I am currently working as a Translator (contractor) from home so I can take care of my daughter.
I have always been involved in volunteering and helping those who are less fortunate than I am. I was a High School teacher for 6 years, worked as a civic education researcher for the Tonga Governance Strengthening Program under the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and  a Pacific Youth Regional Officer Against Corruption based in Suva, Fiji under the United Nations Pacific Regional Anticorruption Project (UNPRAC). Currently, I assist the Town Officer (mayor) of my village and the church leaders as a volunteer. I am a board member of a non-government organization tackling corruption in Tonga especially the youth affected by it. I am also a Stake Young Women President for the LDS Church taking care of 111 young women aged 12-17 and 28 adult officers, and I teach seminary for teenagers in my village and another village. If you have questions or concerns, please shoot me a message on facebook.
