Cycling from Nelson to Dublin

Donation protected
On Saturday 13th October I will be taking part in a charity bike ride from Nelson, (Caerphilly) to Dublin coinciding with the Ireland v Wales UEFA Nations League football match. I have put together a small group of friends who are also taking part in this challenge, which is consisting of 280 miles of cycling over 3 days. Joseph Brain, Bobby Brain, and Callum Yeo will be cycling along with myself, Cris (Fish) Palmer is going to drive the support vehicle, with Matthew (Mini) Harfoot as the co-driver. In the interest of balance and diplomacy, we also have some Irish representation in the form of Nelson resident and staunch Irish supporter David (Dai Irish) Walsh, who will also accompany the boys in the support van and hopefully guide us through the Ireland leg of the journey!

The main reason behind setting up this challenge is that for the past several years I’ve watched as Dementia has taken hold on my Granddad. Seeing him fade into a different person and the impact the condition has on my Nan and the rest of my family has been difficult. So, I’ve decided to try and do something to maybe help others who are affected by the condition by aiming to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society Cymru .

As this challenge coincides with a Wales Away match, I have chosen Gôl Cymru  as another charity to fundraise for. The Gôl! Appeal is the Wales Football Supporters Charity. It is wholly reliant on fund-raising by the fans and aims to help underprivileged children wherever Wales play away. Their good work is evident for all to see on their website and Twitter page.

The final charity we are helping is Kicking Off Against Cancer , of which I am a trustee. It was set up to help those that are affected by cancer in a variety of ways, such as arranging days out/trips away for families or donating toys and games to children’s hospitals. The main aim is to provide support to families and give them some experiences that can help them make long lasting personal memories often at the most difficult of times.

It's going to be a tough 3 days of cycling broken down as follows:

Day 1: Nelson, Caerphilly - St. Clears, Camarthen
Day 2: St. Clears, Camarthen - Wexford, Ireland (via Pembroke - Rosslare Ferry)
Day 3: Wexford - Aviva Stadium, Dublin

We are setting an ambitious fundraising target for this challenge of £500 to each charity. That’s quite a sizable £1500 in total, so any help you can give will be greatly appreciated!
