The African People’s Education and Defense Fund (APEDF) has acquired a license for a low power FM radio station in St. Petersburg, FL.
This offers all kinds of possibilities, in the city of St. Petersburg where the station will be located, but beyond that as well.
Young people who don’t have any voice at all will now have their own radio station.
For young Africans in the community, making their DVDs, their music, their CDs - Black Power 96 becomes a place where they can have their music played. Young people can host radio shows.
There is the potential to actually change the demographics in St. Petersburg by making the city a place that is of such cultural and political significance, that Africans from around the country would want to come here to participate. The station offers an extraordinary opportunity.
Black owned and controlled
This radio station will be funded by the community. You don’t have to worry about corporations or any other kind of entity that’s funding this radio. Which means that the character of the radio station will be shaped and determined by the people in the community.
The community will fund it, will define what it looks like, how it sounds, who’s on it on a regular basis.
It just offers us an extraordinary opportunity for black people to be able to communicate with black people on our own terms.
