Med. Bills/Handicap Access Van

Donation protected

My husband's first cousin has been taking care of her disabled husband for the past several years. She loves to take him to outings, however she does not have a handicapped accessible vehicle to transport him; due to long standing medical bills she is unable to purchase one at this time. She takes him in her SUV and has to maneuver him from his wheelchair to the vehicle.

This is her story: Keena and Douglas (Mac) began dating in 1988 and their first child, Douglas III was born in 1993 and their daughter Dallas was born in 1998. In February of 1999 Mac became ill on his job; he was shaking, his sense of smell was off and he was talking in the past. He was diagnosed with having severe anxiety attacks and was under the care of a psychiatrist from 1999-2002. During this time, his ability to walk and talk became difficult and his speech became slurred. In February, 2003 Mac was finally diagnosed with Fahr's Disease, which is a neurodegenerative disease; his brain is also being calcified and there is no treatment or cure and the disease affects each peson differently. Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005 and Mac was relocated to Lafayette after losing everything. Doctors in Lafayette suggested he get a feeding tube as he was having difficulty swallowing. Unfortunately, he did not get the feeding tube until 2009. Mac lost his ability to speak in 2010 and his ability to walk in 2011, however his mental health is great; he is aware of what goes on around him. The family has tried hyperbaric treatments and chelation therapy neither of which helped but costs thousands of dollars which his family is still paying for. Keena was attending college however she had to quit to take care of Mac; he receives disability and Medicare but because he had a well paying job prior to his disabilty he does not qualify for other services. Keena has had to use her payroll check to ensure that she and her daughter are able to keep their health insurance as well as her flood and homeowners insurance. Her adult son gives her time off so she can work and take care of herself. Keena is God-fearing and God-loving and does not complain about the hand she has been dealt; she continues to love and support her husband with the resources she has. We would love to help Keena and Mac get a handicapped accessible vehicle and possibly have funds to also help them get out of debt.
