Wheelchair for David

Donation protected
In May of this year, my husband, David, and I travelled to New Haven, Connecticut to celebrate our daughter's graduation from the graduate nursing program at Yale University. During the middle of the night, disoriented from exhaustion and the new surroundings, David fell down the stairs on his way to the bathroom. The fall has left him with impaired sensation and severely impaired mobility/paralysis from the shoulders down. He has spent the last 3 months in rehab learning to live life as a quadriplegic. Because of the limited mobility and weakness in his upper body, David is unable to propel himself more than a few dozen feet in a standard light-weight wheelchair. According to Humana, an ultra lightweight wheelchair is 'not medically necessary'. Apparently insurance companies are no longer willing to shell out money for these types of chair. At this point we've decided to take the wheelchair purchase into our own hands. It is just too important to us that David be as independent and functional as possible. We are still working with the insurance company and if by some miracle they approve it, we will donate whatever we've received to a non-profit for spinal cord research, or at the donor's approval we will use the money for other adaptive and medical equipment that David requires.
