Cusco's Surgery

Donation protected

This is Cusco. He's 12 years old and was recently diagnosed with laryngeal paralysis and he needs your help. Laryngeal paralysis is a disorder in which the nerves that control the muscles and cartilage that open and close the larynx (voicebox) do not function properly, causing voice changes and difficulty with eating and breathing. Over the past few months, his breathing has become heavy and labored as he strains to breathe normally. Left untreated, it will become progressively worse making it more and more difficult to breathe.

Surgery consists of pulling back and suturing one side of the larynx, allowing air to flow freely. Cusco should then be able to lead a normal life. The surgery will result in a change or loss of his bark and some coughing or gagging as it will be harder to keep food and liquid from entering the lungs. Although uncommon, aspiration pneumonia, which is caused by food or liquid entering the lungs, is a possible complication.

Cusco is a great dog, sweet and friendly with both people and other dogs. He's been a great friend and companion. Because of his difficulty breathing, I've had to cut back on his activity, restricting him to shorter walks - no running and no more hikes.

Donations will be used to pay for the surgery and any additional and unforeseen costs. There is no way to know how quickly his condition will deteriorate, so surgery will be needed soon to correct this issue.

Cusco and I thank you!
