Curt's Cancer Battle Fund

Donation protected
This fund is for Curt Herman, who was just diagnosed with cancer. We are trying to raise funds to help him and his family with medical expenses and house payments while he is going through this battle. Anything helps and we appreciate your generosity and kindness. This is Curt's Story:

I am 62 years old, born in Danville, PA on November 2, 1954.  I grew up in Newark, Delaware and received my Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from the University of Delaware in 1977.  I am a professional geologist and hold active licenses in Delaware and Pennsylvania.  Immediately out of college, I worked as a field exploration geologist in the oil industry.  After approximately two years in the oil industry, I worked for a few years with my dad in our family business until 1985 when I was given an opportunity to work as an environmental hydrogeologist for the State of Delaware.   As a state employee, I helped write the regulations and guidance manuals for the state of Delaware underground storage tank branch section and also worked as a member of the state emergency response team for hazardous spills and cleanups. I left the state in 1998 to work for a remediation focused consultant from 1988 until 1992 where I gained experience in the remediation of hydrocarbon impacted sites.  I started my own business as a consultant in 1992 where I worked with two previous associates whom I now employed to further develop a new technology to clean up gasoline, diesel and other hydrocarbon and chlorinated hydrocarbon releases.  My company employed approximately 20 people.   and developed an air driven remedial technology that provided successful in-situ cleanups at over 250 sites in sites in Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland and consulting services for more than 750 impacted sites over a twenty five year period.

Our consulting services received high praise from the state of Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and from the State of Pennsylvania Insurance Department (USTIF) who hired my firm as a third party reviewer to oversee consultants that provided similar services to troubleshoot sites where little to no progress had been made and significant monies had been spent to ensure protection of human health and the environment.   My companies efforts with the state of Pennsylvania included litigation support and development of several oversight programs to ensure successful site characterizations and cleanups of hydrocarbon impacted sites while addressing wasteful spending saving taxpayers over twenty million dollars with the programs my company initiated.  I developed, signed and completed many contracts over my twenty-five years as president of my company, but as with any contract, any commitment dedicated in any given contract depends on the integrity and honesty of  the people who sign it.  In that regard, a contract I signed in 2003 with a client, and whose site my company cleaned up, was compromised by the dishonesty of my client and its attorneys resulted in significant financial losses to my company.  My lawsuit against my client and their attorneys is still not resolved after more than seven years of litigation, but we are finally moving towards trial and hopeful for justice and that we will be paid the money owed to us resulting from their dishonesty.

The litigation has left me as the lone employee of my company.  The stress over the years has been significant and now I have been diagnosed with stage 3 squamous cell carcinoma. It is a cancer of the throat/tonsils and appears to be affecting the glands in my neck.  Chemotherapy is not an option at this point due to kidney function factors, I was born with 4 but they don't function the way they are supposed to. I will require surgery and radiation. The doctors are trying to schedule all the scans I will need before I start radiation, which needs to be as soon as possible. I am now limited in my ability to do the tasks I was easily able to complete, cannot complete physical work, and my financial resources depleted over the years of litigation against my former client.  I have always provided for my family (my beautiful wife, and my two beautiful children) but can no longer sufficiently help to the degree necessary to keep our health insurance and keep our home while I am going through the remaining diagnostic and treatment processes.  I am asking for help, so that I can heal, and be in a position to help others as they have helped me.  Thank you in advance for your kindness.
