Cultivating Catskill Trees

Let’s keep the Hudson River Valley green and growing! Help us protect our public trees. We are the  Catskill Tree Council for the Village of Catskill, NY.

We are requesting $4000 to complete a tree inventory of the PUBLIC trees of the Village of Catskill. 

Our varied species of trees add to the charm and beauty of our village. A tree inventory will help us organize an approach to tree planting and care in our community.
The inventory will be used:

To establish a mutually beneficial relationship with the DPW, so that we can work together to create a process for evaluating the health of public trees.
To identify public trees.
To prioritize maintenance schedules in order to reduce the potential liability that results from hazardous trees. 
To streamline the efficiency of street crews and facilitate long-term budgeting.
To educate residents about the benefits of healthy, well-managed community trees, and to inform them about species best suited to the community.
To get grants for the ongoing care and planting of public trees.


This request is the culmination of many years of dedicated volunteer work in the community. An offshoot of Cultivate Catskill, the Tree Council has established a program of planting and caring for memorial trees  on Main Street. Planted in honor of friends and loved ones, these beautiful trees make our community a pleasant place to live and visit . We have so far planted over 70 trees, with more to come, and all paid for through private sponsorship of fellow community members. Volunteers care for these trees, pruning, weeding, mulching, watering, and feeding. Two years ago the Village Board passed a village tree ordinance to protect the public trees that benefit all of us.
