Help Shari & Sean Get to TASH!

Donation protected

Dear Friends, Family, and Colleagues:

We have been blessed to be a part of some amazing programs in Chicago over the last couple years, and we have a new one to announce:

We were invited to do TWO Break-Out Sessions at the TASH Conference in Washington, DC. It will take place on December 3-5, 2014. Our primary goal in attending and presenting is inclusion for ALL! It is a focus for both in activism and advocacy efforts.

This conference, presenting and the social networking opportunities, could profoundly, positively affect our lives. This conference would help Sean find a permanent job as he transitions into the final stages of his Master's program. The conference would add to Shari's public-speaking skill and knowledgability, so that she might find a job, and as she prepares (with the GRE and other steps) to be accepted into a inclusion-focused disability studies program in Boston, MA, the only one like it in the country so far.

One Break-Out Session is, "The Danger of 'Inspiration Porn'" discussing the damage the hijacking of disability images by non-disabled people/organizations (to shame each other or make themselves feel better) has done to the disability community at large, and how it has cheapened the hard work put in by those who are successful at sports, the arts, or any other aspect of disability culture.

The other Break-Out Session is, "Interdependent Community Inclusion," an analysis and discussion of the interconnected aspects of access to employment, housing, and transportation for those with disabilities transitioning from high school to adult life, or out of institutions. We will discuss some of the aspects of the experience of community living that seem lacking at the present time.

Listed on this page are some of the monetary needs we have anticipated to make this experience a reality for us, and you can designate any amount you are able to contribute how you would like us to use it, just check out the wishlist.

It's important to have our community of supporters behind us!

We can't make it there without support, so we will definitely be promoting this more than previous funding efforts we've tried!

With Hope,

Shari & Sean Denton-Plomann

PS Any surplus in the money raised will be donated to TASH, which is a 501c3 organization.

If you CANNOT donate, please forward this to those you know who may be interested in helping us out!

*** GoFundMe DOES take a small fee for usage, so if you would like to donate without a deduction, we can send you a private message with our address, and Shari DOES have a PayPal account. Those with Chase Accounts may find it even easier to use QuickPay***

For your information, The official name of the organization has gone through several changes since its inception more than 35 years ago. It was first called the American Association for the Education of the Severely and Profoundly Handicapped. In 1980, the name was changed to The Association for the Severely Handicapped, reflecting the organization’s broader mission. Again in 1983, the name was changed to The Association for Persons with Severe Handicaps, although the acronym TASH was widely used. In 1995, the Board of Directors voted to discontinue the full name of the organization as it did not reflect current values. The acronym, TASH, was maintained due to its wide recognition.
