Malawi Children's Mission (MCM)
Overview:
My mother, Tamera Corsaro, and I will be heading to Malawi this upcoming summer to volunteer with the Malawi Children's Mission, which is a charity group that helps to provide quality education, healthcare, and support for the thousands of oprhaned children within this country.
My mother and I will be leading the medical team and working in the clinic along side the singluar nurse that works there year round. The most common issues seen within the clinic are malaria, cuts and wounds, neuropathy in the feet, respiratory infections, nasal infections, skin infections, and diarrhea. 15 of the children we will be working with are HIV positive.
We will be bringing over much needed medical supplies, and helping to treat approximately 150 of the orphaned children within the community. Along with helping in the clinic, we will be teaching the nurse, adults, and children the best ways to deal with every day health issues. In support of our efforts, we are trying to raise as much money and awareness for MCM as possible.
More Details:
The clinic we will be working in is an on-site medical area that provides services for minor health issues. In Malawi, almost 50% of children under 5 suffer from stunted growth, and 6 out of 10 children suffer from anemia. 7 out of 10 child deaths in Malawi are due to preventable causes, and only 6% of orphans receive any type of medical support. MCM is working to combat these issues, and provide the much needed support for these children.
Within Malawi, 770,000 children are orphaned due to AIDS with 180,000 children living HIV positive. The small community we will be servicing in Malawi consists mostly of orphans and the adults that take care of these children. MCM helps to provide for the orphans, as most of the children lack sufficient adult supervision and guidance within the community. MCM helps to keep the children from working menial jobs to provide for themselves, and helps to provide proper nutrition and education for the children to build strong lives.
