In August 2018, the doctors called and wanted to do some more tests, by September we had an answer, by October she had surgery, and by November she'll be beginning chemotherapy, radiation and treatments to wage war on...breast cancer.
Emahn has been my best friend since 2004, she is the strongest person I know and the most intelligent. But strong people need support and anyone who knows Emahn knows she will not ask for it but is also the first to volunteer to help anyone else. So I'm asking for help, for our friend, sister, mother, colleague, mentor, political motivator, amazing human.
Emahn is a single mom to Cameron, her son, who is in elementary school. Not only does she have to worry about explaining to him why mommy has no hair, why mommy is too tired to help him do homework, too sick to cater to him, not being able to have anymore children, she also has to worry about the devastating financial impacts of missing work through chemotherapy treatments the next 4 months consecutively, paying $600 a month for medical insurance, copays, deductibles, prescriptions, and everything else life throws.
For anyone else, facing cancer without a partner, living in a city far from home, alone with their child would be all too much. But for Emahn, she's smiling through it, motivating everyone to vote, inspiring us, and through it all- I haven't seen her cry yet as I've held back my tears to stay strong for her.
So I'm asking anyone who knows Emahn, help out with what you can so she can focus on beating this instead of being overwhelmed with bills and finances- the last thing a young mother facing cancer should be worrying about.
