Get Lionel to Bremen for Internship

Hi,
my Name is Benjamin Post, I study marine biology in Bremen and want to support Lionel Ngoupeyou Tondji, a student in Mathematics from Cameroon to come to Bremen, Germany, for a research internship of one month in May or June at the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT ).

How we met:
I met Lionel in Senegal in early February, where we both took part in a winter school in computational modelling. The course was organized by Prof. Agostino Merico, Dr. Jailson Fulgencio de Moura  and Prof. Moustapha Fall and I was taking part as a student and taking photos & filming for a documentary on the winter school.

The winter school took place at the African Institute in Mathematical Sciences in Senegal , which is part of a pan-African network of centres of excellence for postgraduate education, research and outreach in mathematical sciences.
The course was intensive and it was a wonderful experience to be surrounded by so many bright and highly motivated students, and among them was Lionel.

Lionel Ngoupeyou Tondji:
Lionel struck me as both very down-to-earth and incredibly sophisticated in his work and research. He is now 24 years old and is about to complete his second master degree in mathematics. 
The first one was in Cameroon at the University of Yaoundé I in pure mathematics and algebra, which he paused shortly before defending his thesis in order to attend the second (fully funded) master at AIMS Senegal, focusing on big data, machine learning and cryptography. The week after the winter school, he had to defend his Master Thesis at AIMS, which he did successfully (as top student of his year!). After this, in March, he is returning to Cameroon to defend his first master thesis.
Lionel really impressed me with his programming skills. He effortlessly completed the exercises during the course and even suggested technical improvements to the lecturers!

Working in Research:
Yet, despite all of his skill and experience, he is very unsure about his future. From talking with him, often together with Prof. Merico, I learned that he is very sincere about pursuing an academic career and would like to go to other places than Cameroon and Senegal to gather international experience. 

To find a good PhD-position in the international scientific community it is absolutely important to have experience of working abroad in different working groups. This is true for German students like me, but even more so for students from Africa.
From his own experience he told us that he has already sent dozens of applications to professors in USA, Europe and Asia, but never received a single reply.

Crowdfunding for Lionel:
During the winter school, Lionel showed great interest into the topics that Prof. Merico's group is working on, and this is where we started to discuss the possibility of him coming to Bremen for a research internship.

Securing funding for such short-term and relatively spontaneous activities can be difficult in the scheme of rigid research grants, paying salaries and projects in the long term. Needless to say, Lionel or his family have no means of self-financing this endeavour.

We think it would be a great opportunity for Lionel and for our research group to have him in Bremen and collaborate on a small research project. This is where the idea for crowdfunding came to us!

The costs:
The costs for the internship have been calculated as follows:

- a flight from Cameroon to Germany and back: 800 €
- accommodation in Bremen for one month: 500 €
- a daily allowance of 25 € for food, transportation, visa fees, medical insurance and other activities

for 28 days, this adds up to 2000 € in total, which is the goal of this crowdfunding campaign. 

Together with Prof. Agostino Merico and Dr. Jailson Fulgencio de Moura, I will help organize the intership.

Why?
Lionel is a very talented student who has great potential to become an impactful scientist. You could play a part in giving him an opportunity to come to Bremen and learn more about ecological modelling and experience international research, which can be crucial for his future development as a scientist. 

I hope that this will inspire other students and researchers to do likewise.
The level of motivation and commitment of the students I met in Senegal is astounding, yet their means to participate in the international scientific community are still quite limited. AIMS is an incredible step in this direction, and we would like to do our small part to help. 

To quote Neil Turok, the founder of AIMS and the Next Einstein Forum:

“We believe that the next Einstein will be African and that he or she will develop solutions that cross borders and change lives."

I am not saying this will definitely be Lionel, but who knows.. :)

Ich bin Benjamin Post und studiere Meeresbiologie in Bremen. Mit dieser Crowdfunding-Kampagne möchte ich Lionel Tondji Ngoupeyou, ein Mathematikstudent aus Kamerun, unterstützen damit er für ein wissenschaftliches Praktikum von einem Monat nach Bremen an das Leibniz-Zentrum für Marine Tropenforschung (ZMT) kommen kann.

Ich habe Lionel Anfang Februar im Senegal getroffen, wo wir beide bei einem Kurs über ökologische Modellierung teilgenommen haben. Der Kurs wurde von Prof. Agostino Merico , Dr. Jailson Fulgencio de Moura and Prof. Moustapha Fall organisiert und ich habe als Student teilgenommen. Zusätzlich hatte ich noch die Aufgabe einen kleinen Dokumentarfilm über die "Winter School" einzufangen. 

Der Kurs fand in M'Bour im AIMS Senegal (Afrikanisches Institut für Mathematische Wissenschaft) statt. AIMS ist ein pan-Afrikanisches Netzwerk von Instituten die exzellente Forschung und Bildung im Bereich der Mathematik fördern.
Die "Winter School" war intensiv und es war eine wunderbare Erfahrung von so vielen intelligenten und höchst motivierten Studenten umgeben zu sein. Einer von ihnen war Lionel.

Lionel Tondji Ngoupeyou:
Lionel hat mich von Anfang beeindruckt, sowohl durch seine unprätentiöse Art, als auch durch sein technisches und wissenschaftliches Know-How. Er ist gerade einmal 24 Jahre alt und steht kurz davor seinen zweiten Master-Studiengang abzuschließen. 
Den ersten (in Algebra und purer Mathematik) hatte er in Kamerun an der Universität von Yaoundé I angefangen, doch kurz vor seiner Thesis-Verteidigung wurde er beim hoch angesehenen Masterpogramm an AIMS Senegal angenommen. Diesen Master (in Big Data und Kryptographie) schloss er mit seiner Thesis-Verteigung in der Woche nach der Winter School ab, als bester Student in seinem Jahrgang!
Im März wird er nun seinen ersten Master in Kamerun abschließen.

Lionel programmiert viel und gerne, und ist mir mit seinen technischen Kenntnissen weit voraus. Gerade in meinem Forschungsbereich (dem ökologischen Modellieren) sind solche Fertigkeiten sehr nützlich. Trotzdem ist es noch ungewiss, wie es für ihn nach den zwei Master-Abschlüssen weitergeht. Lionel möchte mit einer Doktorarbeit anfangen, doch die Chance für eine gute Stelle angenommen zu werden ist gering, solange man keine international Forschungserfahrung vorweisen kann.

Lionel hat großes Interesse an den Forschungsthemen von Prof. Merico's Gruppe am ZMT, und wir saßen oft Abends zusammen und haben Möglichkeiten diskutiert. Dabei kam uns die Idee für dieses Crowdfunding.

Der Plan:
Lionel soll im Mai oder Juni für einen Monat nach Bremen kommen und an einem Forschungsprojekt mit Dr. Jailson Fulgencio de Moura und Prof. Agostino Merico arbeiten.

Die Kosten stellen sich wie folgt zusammen:

Flug von Senegal und zurück: 800 €
Unterkunft in Bremen für einen Monat: 500 €
Täglicher Posten zur Deckung von Essen, Transport, Kosten für Visa und Versicherung: 25 €

Für 28 Tage sind das insgesamt 2000 €, welches das Ziel dieser Crowdfundingkampagne ist.

Warum?
Lionel ist ein äußerst talentierter und ernsthafter Student, mit großem Potential ein bedeutender Wissenschaftler zu werden. Hier können Sie uns helfen Lionel die Möglichkeit zu geben nach Bremen zu kommen, um mehr über ökologische Modellierung zu lernen und internationale Forschungserfahrung zu sammeln, was für seine weitere Laufbahn als Wissenschaftler von großer Wichtigkeit ist. 

Ich hoffe, dass es andere Studenten und Forscher inspirieren wird ähnliches zu tun.
Die Motivation und der Einsatz von den Studenten die ich am AIMS Senegal getroffen habe, hat mich
zutiefst beeindruckt. Trotzdem fehlen vielen Studenten noch die (finanziellen) Möglichkeiten an der internationalen Wissenschaftsgemeinde teilzunehmen. AIMS ist ein fantastischer Schritt in diese Richtung und wir würden gerne unseren Teil dazu beitragen. 

Um Neil Turok, den Gründer von AIMS und des "Next Einstein Forum" zu zitieren:

"Wir glauben, dass der nächste Einstein aus Afrika kommen wird und er oder sie Lösungen entwickeln wird, die Grenzen überschreiten und Leben verändern werden."

Ich behaupte nicht, dass dies bestimmt Lionel sein wird.. aber wer weiß.. :)
