Crossing America for Cancer

Crossing America
for UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Research

As you may or may not know, in June of 2011, my grandmother was diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma, a form of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Although she resides in Florida, she made her decision to come to Pittsburgh for her care and was treated by the cancer experts at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. For the next six months after her diagnosis, she lived in Pittsburgh and received her chemotherapy and radiation treatments under the wonderful care of Dr. Marks, Dr. Heron and the dedicated nurses and staff at the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. Through a difficult time, she persevered and successfully fought the cancer.  She is doing great six years later and is now cancer free. I am so proud of her courage.

I am deeply thankful for the care that my grandmother received while being treated at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, that I was inspired to embark on a summer-long journey where I will be raising funds for cancer research. On June 24th, I will take part in a bicycling journey of over 3,300 miles with the group, Overland Summers. I will be leaving from the Atlantic Ocean in Charleston, SC on June 24, 2017 and arriving at the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica, CA on August 7, 2017. I am incredibly excited for such a wonderful opportunity, and want to use this trip as an opportunity to raise awareness and raise funds for cancer research.

Funding for cancer research is more important now than ever. With almost 400 clinical and research faculty members specializing in a wide range of disciplines including cancer prevention and early detection, and end of life care, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is truly determined to defeat cancer. UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is also the region’s only National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and they been recognized nationally for their world-class cancer care and research.

I have set a goal of raising $10,000 in support of unrestricted cancer research at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. Can I count on your support in helping me to reach my goal? I am asking all donors to make a gift of at least $33-, which breaks down to $0.01 per mile of my trip. However, every gift is meaningful and makes a difference. Philanthropic support, of any amount, is a force that fuels innovative cancer research aimed at developing new approaches to preventing and treating cancer. Together, we can truly fight cancer.

Please visit UPMC Hillman Cancer Center’s website to make a donation
or directly on my GoFundMe page . Although I am encouraging you to make your gift to unrestricted cancer research, you may also designate your gift to a specific type of cancer, by going through UPMC Hillman Cancer Center’s website or reaching out to one of the contacts below. Please note that all donations are tax-deductible. If your employer would like to make a matching contribution, or if you have any questions about making a donation to UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, please call Meghan Boehm at [phone redacted] ([email redacted]) , or Eleanor Flannery at [phone redacted] ([email redacted]) .

Thank you so much for your consideration to support a cause that means so much to my family and I. Please feel free to share my story and use the hashtag #CrossingAmericaForCancer to see photos from my trip and to spread the word about the importance of donating to cancer research at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center.
