Crosby High Special Ed. Forest school resources

Did you know that 75% of children in the UK spend less time outside than a prison inmate?  At Crosby High SEN School we want to change that.

We are a secondary level special school with 130 pupils, we are keen to involve our pupils and their families in outdoor learning to help them develop life skills such as using tools, improving communication, developing social skills as well as increasing their physical activity levels and provide therapeutic learning for their mental well being. Our children find it difficult to play outside in natural surroundings, as they often need lots of support even at home, this project will help them develop these skills and knowledge about wildlife.

We have some woodland areas in our school grounds already, but these are not accessible for our pupils, some have learning disabilities, some have limited mobility and sensory impairments so we want to make these areas safe– this would include undertaking tree safety works, cutting back vegetation removal of rubbish tipped over the neighboring fences, bringing in natural seating of differing heights for our pupils and creating better wildlife habitats including bird boxes and habitat piles as well as making pathways for our wheelchair users

I am also keen to train as a Forest School Leader. This training will give us the skills to enable to work with our pupils and parents, our school will also contribute towards this.

We  also desperately need like to buy suitable water proof clothing and equipment including a removable shelter which will enable our pupils to learn outdoors at all times of year. At the moment we don't even have a shed to store necessary equipment, it is all being kept on the floor of my classroom.

The sooner we get these resources, the sooner the children can leave the inside of the classroom and start to learn outdoors.

Thank you for taking the time to read this,

Michael Hannaway, Year 8 Teacher.
