Critical Thinking For P.E.A.C.E. (CTP) is an organization which brings Rwandan youth, of the generation after the genocide, together for different programs which promote peace sustainability, social cohesion, empathy, and cultural celebration and preservation.
CTP is an organization formed as a merge of two grant winning projects; the 2017 Davis Projects for Peace Grant winner, Julia Lisi, for her project titled Rwanda For P.E.A.C.E, and 2016 Grant Winners Derrick Murekezi and Ian Manzi, for their project titled Critical Thinking For Peace (CT4P). Julia Lisi is a recent grad from Sarah Lawrence College, and Ian Manzi of the University of Rochester. Derrick Murekezi is a part of the University of Rochester class of 2019. CTP's newest member, Dejoie Sylvain, studies at Ashesi University in Ghana.
These four young people are motivated by their passion to create the next generation of critical thinkers who understand their role in sustaining peace in their communities. In Rwanda today, there exists a divide of two generations; a generation that lived through and survived the genocide against the Tutsi, and one that was born after the genocide. The former generation fought selflessly for the peace that Rwanda enjoys today, while the latter has lived and enjoyed the fruits of the peace that the former laid out, almost as though it is a birthright. While this is not a completely wrong perception, it is also true that one who forgets past mistakes is prone to repeat them naively.
CTP's first program is our annual Youth Peace Camp, which is a week-long camp which brings youth together to learn in depth the history of Rwanda with a special focus on the 1994 Genocide Perpetrated Against the Tutsi. This camp is taught by experienced teachers of Rwandan history and peacebuilding in Rwanda and internationally such as Aegis Trust, Never Again Rwanda, the Institute of Research and Dialogue for Peace and The Commission for the National Commission for the Fight Against Genocide.
The other program provided by CTP is our annual Umurage Nyawo (True Legacy) Cultural Concert. Umurage Nyawo is a cultural initiative that focuses on celebrating Rwandan musical legends, and highlighting their contributions to society through traditional concerts. Through these concerts and other community activities, Umurage Nyawo brings young and old together to celebrate for a cause, by donating all proceeds to identified social initiatives.
We hosted our first Youth Peace Camp in 2016 at the Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village (ASYV), with 32 students from 16 schools from all 4 provinces of Rwanda and Kigali city. In 2017, we successfully expanded the camp’s impact by working with 65 students from 25 different schools across the country.
Our second camp took place in August of 2017 also at ASYV. Our number of students doubled, and we hosted 65 students from 28 different schools across the country.
Our 2017 Umurage Nywao Concert, hosted by the Serena Hotel in Kigali, was attended by 400 people both young and old, celebrated the late Kamaliza, a famous singer in Rwanda and a participant in the liberation struggle. The concert raised one million Rwandan Francs for Maria Uwanjye, Kamaliza's sister who continued to raise orphans left by the genocide that Kamaliza had been taking care of before she passed.
We plan to host our third camp in just two short months, in August of 2018. Looking to the future, we will develop our curriculum further, and ultimately look to expand CTP's programs to other countries, including Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Kenya, and the United States of America. The 2018 Umurage Nyawo concert will also happen during the week of the camp, and will this year be integrated into the camp's curriculum as an experiential learning component.
As of May 2018, CTP is officially fiscally sponsored by A Foundation of Philanthropic Funds (FJC), a 501c3 public charity. As such, all donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
